Hello im new to this forum and sorry the English isent my strongest part (im from Denmark in europe).

I hope you Guys can answer me about if i combine and old Intel core i7 920 OC to 4 GHz whit 2 GTX 970 in sli is a great or bad idea?

I now my CPU i pretty old now so its maybe time for a new CPU. It is not that i need more CPU power its more GPU i need more off.

My total system info is as of now:

Core i7 920 OC to 4 GHz
ASUS Rampage II Extreme ROG
12 GB DDR3 ram Corsair 1600 MHz
Crusial M4 64 GB SSD for OS
2 x WD Velociraptor 150 GB 10000 RPM in raid 0
WD Caviar Black 1 TB
WD AV-GP 2 TB harddrive
2 x Zotac GTX 660 TI in SLI and are overclock.

my pc scores 9416 i 3dmark firetrike as it is now:

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/4381143?

And found whis whit a i7 920 and 2 GTX 970 i sli whit a score of 15545:

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3234573

So it looks like 2 new GTX 970 would give a nice increase i performence on this old lady. or would it still be a bad idea. I am gamming in 1980x1200 resolution right now, but that will soon be over cause i am planning on getting a 27" screen whit better resolution also.

my concern is that the old CPU would bottleneck 2 GTX 970 in sli to much?

Thats great news (Money saved). And yes those old i7 920 really do a great Work even after it is almost 6 years ago i got this CPU.

My own 3dmark score score in a image, if that is at any interest:

https://billedeupload.dk/images/w9vu.jpg

But i would like answers from others also. Do you agreed that my old CPU will run just fine whit 2 GTX 970 in sli?

I agree, an i7 920 is still very capable especially at 4GHz. Jumping from the i7 920 to the latest CPU may bring in roughly 50% more raw CPU power, however (factoring in IPC improvements, and higher clockspeeds achievable with the right overclockable CPU).

You want better GPUs. Get them. Sure a faster CPU will give you the one or two extra FPS on an 27". Most people that really wants to be at the forefront went from i7 920 years ago when they upgraded to 680/780 or what ever. I'm sure you will love them.

I'd say go for it. It's a good CPU nonetheless and your gaming will be fun.

Thanks every one. So as i understand it, a new CPU (whis will also need new motherboard and properly new ram also) will only give a few more FPS and my i7 920 can still handle it. A CPU upgrade dosent seems to be worth it at all can i se you Guys try to tell me.

I am keeping that i7 920 a year or two, unless it dies before that cause of the overclock. That old 920 has really being a great bay at that time.

If you are planing to post again (you are of course most welcome) I suggest to fill in you System Specs including PSU. Good luck with your new 970s. I tried (24/7/365 OC'ed) most decent brands and I fried all but MSI's.

Yeah, a new CPU will help in games, but not by much. Not worth upgrading a 4GHz 920 just for games. My Q6600 @3.2 runs BF4 nicely with my 660ti.

#12 at stock i would never get such a powerful GPU setup. Cause there the CPU would deffently be a bottleneck.

#13 system spec is filled. By fried do you mean CPU/motherboard or GPU?

I have never fried hardware cause of overclock (eccept a Gainward GTX 570, that died after 2 years whit OC. Properly because gainward is cheap crap).

Else i have overclokket a Geforce 4 MX 440, 6600 GT, 3 x GTX 285 i 3 way sli, 2 x GTX 570 in sli, 2 x GTX 660 TI and now very soon 2 GTX 970 in SLI.
My i7 920 is the first CPU i have overclock (the other pc´s i have had, the motherboard ditten support OC).

My best advice for not fried hardware and give it a long life is. Keep it cool and do not overvolt. I have never overvoltet any of my hardware. The CPU have being running at 3,8 to 4 GHz nealy the last 2 years now. and i have read i7 920 being overclock for 4-5 years and still run like a champ.

#14 yeah, since it not much more performence and new CPU would need new mohterboard and properly also memory. So its not worth if it is just maybe like 5-10 % increase.

#13 Oh and i have always kept my GPU´s for atleast 2 years before change. And only one GPU have failed.

im thinking on getting 2 EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 since EVGA allows for overclock whitout losing warranty unless it gets physical damage.

#18 im planning in a very near future to go on to a 27" screen whit 2556 x 1440 resolution and i dont think one Card is enough for those games i play.
Games i play including some of the more demanding games like crysis 3, metro 2033/last light, Watch dogs, BF4, far cry 4 and maybe GTA 5 (spec is stil unknown for these game).

It all depends on what settings you play with. These fps are from max settings. If were ok with going medium settings you would be ok.

just go with the 2x970, your I7-920 is a powerhouse even today, especially just over 4Ghz.

Held og lykke :).

Whenever you decide you need more raw CPU power, just slap in and overclock a six-core 32nm 95W TDP Xeon, the X56xx series (X5660, X5670) in particular, which can be bought cheap on ebay. Since you're on a decent ASUS motherboard, you should get a really nice overclock out of a Xeon.

#22 Nice to now. Sure my GTX 970 would performe nice also so.

#23 Thats is my plan... tak:D

#24 Then i finally thinking of a new CPU. It will be a complete new system based on i keep my CPU for another year or two.
Then the system will be about 7-8 years old and i will nok trust so old PSU, harddrives and so on.

Best solution at the moment would be to sell your i7 920, and buy an X58 XEON, for example x5650 x5670 x5675 so on so on.
X5650s are currently going for about 80€ on ebay. x5660 for about 120€ and x5670 for about 130€
Having 6 cores and 12 threads at these really nice prices really has put x58 back on the frontlines and breathing some life back into an older platform.
They tend to clock very well.
I've taken my x5660 up to 4,8ghz for example.

Combined with 2 970s in SLI you really can't get much better in gaming from newer platforms atm tbh.

a 920 whilst by no means useless is getting on in years and there will be games where you will find your self cpu limited even at 4Ghz Total War,Planetside 2,arma 3 .. day z
performace will be more then acceptable at 1080p but above that you are asking a aweful lot from a 6 year old cpu
also make sure you read up before overclocking those lga1366 chips can be a bit touchy when it comes to the voltage
