I use to have a GTX 470 and i sent it back and got a 6970,let me tell you its like night and day!

So you paid an extra 67% in cost, and got about 10-15% increase in frame rates.

I would say go for it.... the reason is... the GTX 470 is a power hog. While The GTX 560 wouldn't be an upgrade in SLI from your gtx 470.... Single vs single the GTX 560 would use less power plus give you about a 10% upgrade in performance not to mention more overclockablilty. You also could do the exchange rather even.... sell you GTX 470 for about $180/190 and save up just a couple bucks more and there you go your upgrade.

If you went the 6950 route you would be using even less power single card vs single card....also would be gaining about a 12% to 15% performance gain in some games. (Sometimes more performance gain then that) Especially with the new 11.1a hot fix drivers. That card is really coming into it's own beating the GTX480/580 in some single tests and beating them allot more in Crossfire tests. While it doesn't beat them in most every game.... that is still an accomplishment for a card that was never meant to compete with the GTX 580/480. You could save even more money in one of two ways.... One buy the 2gb version and flash it to a 6970. Or save yourself some money... spend about the same as a GTX 560 and buy the 1Gb model.... which will beat the GTX 560 hands down in most everything. Then if you still have enough money get a second one and blow your GTX 470 away.

If you really want to upgrade.... those are some really great options. I understand how wanting the latest tech goes.... and sometimes even though you might not need an upgrade..... you just want one. So if that's the case one of these two options is what I would go for.

Otherwise..... your GTX 470 I am sure will be just fine for time to come. And I am sure you really wouldn't need to upgrade until next gen.... 7000 series/ GTX 600 series. But shoot man.... I just got a couple of 6950 1gb and I was using 6870's.... so I know your feeling.

*** After Thought****
I upgrade all the time in small limits like you are describing. Just because I get board easy.... and I can't stand having a smaller E penis then someone else. But I have owned GTX 460's/5850's/5870's/GTX 470's and few others from last gen.... I can tell you that even my 6870's felt more smooth and better performing then any of them. Especially after they got the drivers right. Ther Frame rates might not have always been higher I.E. 5870's.... but the 6870's felt better! I say go for it!!! :toast:

I have one and I wouldnt... the performance of a 470 is really strong especially at your clocks...

only way I would spend so much money on a 6950 is if you can unlock it. even then.. at your clocks you're looking at nothing more than 5-10% difference. you wouldnt see it with the naked eye lol.

The power savings is only something like 20w, it isn't that big of a deal, and certainly not worth sacrificing a stronger card for. Yes, the GTX470 seems weaker because stock vs. stock the GTX470 loses. However, the GTX470 only loses at stock because nVidia went really conservative with the clock speeds the first round with Fermi, once overclocked a GTX560 can't keep up with a GTX470 because the GTX470 is a better card at heart. The GTX560 has some minor advantages, but performance wise there it just doesn't make sense.

how many gtx470's do you have?? Main reason why i ask is because i want a 470 with a better VID then my 1.0v VID 470. Id like down at like 950mV so then im not pumping as much voltage through it for my overclocks and i could get higher

I currently have 3, I'm not sure on what any of their original VIDs were as they've all been flashed to a different BIOS with unlocked voltage.

I've owned 3 470s too (2 ASUS, 1 EVGA), all flashed as well. The 470s OC so well, flashing them for unlocked voltage prvents you from being held back by voltage.

well the reason the ati 6870 and what not feel smooth in game play now is because the minimum FPS is actually up at the playable FPS unlike before where the 5870 would dip down into the teens. Going from the 5870 to the 470 the game play was way smoother i now see minimum frame rate 15 fps lower then the average if not less

EDIT: i think ive decided to wait on any performance upgrades till a game really needs it to be maxed out :pBattleField 3:p *hint*. Instead ill be upgrading my sound from these craptastic logitechs to some M Audio AV40 and a Soundcard and possibly a new L desk and down grade to a higher quality 850w PSU like hte AX850

My 2 Asus 470s on stock cooling went up to 770Mhz, and my EVGA w/ Zalman VF3000f is at 850Mhz. Thats a pretty beefy OC.

yes once i come up with extra cash to pay the difference between the hx1000 and the ax850 or x850

what is the stock voltage?? lower then 1000mV???

mine is at 800mhz 1050mV now

I love my MSI GTX470. Got a good deal on it. Best single card I have ever had. Plays all my games with lots of 3d eye candy and good fps. Does well at benchmarks. Over clocks well. I'm going to stick liquid loop heat sink on it soon and over clock it more and enjoy it till games are more demanding or something much better comes out that isn't too expensive. GTX470 has earned a sweet spot in my single gpu powered machine.

A little over 800 mhz on the core in my rig scores over 27,000 in 3dmark06.

That is with stock cooling on the gpu. It can play any game I have tried with it.

i guess its not necessary to upgrade, maybe until theres any vga that would give 30% higher performance than your card

I wouldn't even call it an upgrade at this stage, I used to have a 5970+5870 trifire setup but only found Crysis to be the only game that actually needed it apart from benchmarks.

My 5870 handles all games at 60fps even the new ones at max settings, your GTX470 should be capable of exactly the same thing, wait and save the money for something else IMO unless you're a bench junkie.
