Internet dead while uploading to YouTube

I don't know why this keeps happening but when i upload something to YouTube, my internet just gives up. Every bit of bandwith goes to the YouTube upload and the rest of my pc is left with nothing.

Steam goes offline, pinging Google times out, browsing results in time-outs, basically everything internet related shuts down except the YouTube upload.

When i upload to We-Transfer this problem does not exist.

I am connected by a TP-LINK TL-SG1008D 8Port Gigabit switch which is connected to my cablemodem. The switch is unmanaged and does not have QoS.

I use Obtain an IP address automatically and the Google DNS servers as IPv4 settings.

In Windows Logs i get the following error:

The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is unknown.

Sounds to me like the Youtube upload is using up all your upload bandwidth. You can try something like NetLimiter to limit the bandwidth the Youtube upload is taking.

iirc, there's something about how TCP connections work (ACK packets?) that will kill your download speed if you max your upload. Ideally, you'd just QoS your upload speed to 90% of the total bandwidth. If that's not an option (DD-WRT?), NetLimiter (or something similar) would be a good route to go.

This affects just about everyone. It's not just you.

Yeah forgot to mention all connected devices' internet is dead, wifi, ethernet, the whole thing.
The strange thing is that i do not encounter when uploading to other services such as wetransfer or dropbox.

I had a similar issue last week on one of the PC's at the job. It wouldn't allow uploading or playback of youtube until I plugged in a set of headphones. What he is describing is exactly what was happing to me. F#$KING STRANGE I know. But its worth a try. Every other video service worked fine. Play or upload on youtube and kaboom, no interwebs until I quit the browser or restarted the computer. Then it would find the network again. Headphones plugged in and she works like a charm.

I have really no idea why.

Lol, we have the same issue with one of our tv recording and encoding mules in the office. Internet just doesnt work when it's uploading, our solution was to plug in a set of headphones. Sounds absolutely ridiculous, but MM has a point.

sounds like they have some shady monitoring software installed and its not allowing a connection until it senses a audio stream it can monitor

It's just tcp sh!t. Different os/apps etc implement things differently. I would suggest you use sgtcpoptimizer and tweak your settings a bit. Also, you haven't mentioned what browser you're using, but I'd suggest change it just to verify. Do try out a totally different os too, like the bootable AND totally runnable-from-the-cd linux distros like ubuntu...

I think you lost him at TCP optimizers. If this was modem directly in to PC, maybe, but Windows' default settings for 10/100/1000 are likely the best.

Additionally, I noticed a while back I had to reformat less often when I stopped messing with hidden away registry settings.

My opinion is just to suggest that giving less precedence to browser activity might help. What's so wrong with that?

I find people often mistake low-level, delicate tools as a "click this to make things faster" button. If misconfigured, it could make things worse. I don't mean to say it won't help, just I don't think it'll make it all that much better over the default Windows settings.

There's a generally negative disposition towards these kinds of optimizers simply because of how many uneducated people monkey with settings like these only to make it worse. I think there are other ways that are more proper for handling this issue.

It could be worth a shot though.

That and its not likely the problem anyway messing with the TCP window settings is a great way to fubar things

I had crappy TWC ambit modem that would do something similar when you started running up against the upload speed cap it would simply reset its self
I would start my logging into the modems user interface and poking around looking for the logs( the modem NOT the switch)

Probably youtube is the only thing using 100% of your upload, I'm on a 2mb/512kbps adsl, and when I'm using 100% of my upload, everything else fails to work. My previous ISP used some kind of traffic shapping hardware and it didnt matter if I was uploading stuff, at least I could still use the internet, but my new ISP is using FIFO(First In First Out), similar to verizon fios iirc. So I had to install cfosspeed to avoid ping times of 3000ms+ or timeouts while uploading.

For those with asrock mobos, their XFast Lan software is the same cfosspeed, so you can have it for free
