Is 16Gb System Ram needed for a GTX 970 or any 4Gb Card?

I'm finally getting a 970 in the next couple of weeks so I can game with reasonable quality settings @1080p(760 has been a 2nd hand cheap placeholder)

I currently have 8Gb 2400Mhz Gskill Trident, do I need to add another 8 Gb to maximise the 970 or is it totally irrelevant?

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to these sort of things and wondered if there is any correlation between the two....Thanks guys :)

Irrelevant.

But remember, everything that runs live on your PC, your OS, currently used programs, etc need to run in RAM, so when you run out, and it starts caching things to PF, even with SSD's in RAID0 your system will slow down greatly. 8GB should still be sufficient depending on your usage habits and how much stuff you leave open.

Graphics memory is independent of system memory in this aspect, though I do believe that drivers and maybe DX allow for system memory to be utilized for caching, and up to a 1:1 ratio with the graphic's card's memory. I'm not uber clear on this, but with 4GB of frame buffer on your graphics card, you should be pretty well set for many games at 1080P. :)

8gb is fine just about standard now. 16 is okay if you play around with video and stuff.

970 should work fine with 8gb system ram.

Possibly, it depends on how much is being used when you're doing nothing and if you're filling system memory when you play a game. The moment that you fill up your ram and Windows starts swapping out pages to make more room for the game, you start hitting issues with stuttering and smoothness. I run with my page file disabled and there have been several instances where games have pushed my usage past 8GB with everything else going on.

Sooner or later, you're going to need more memory with the way things are going (and always have,) so I wouldn't say that it's a bad thing to do.

Thanks a lot, I'm thinking maybe I should just upgrade it anyway as DDR3 is pretty cheap now, trouble is I have two sticks so another two and the board is fully populated. Perhaps I should sell my two and just get two sticks of 8.

EDIT - Yeh, I think you're right Aquinus. An upgrade wouldn't hurt anyway, regardless of whether it will help the 970 or not.

It would help eliminate memory capacity as a potential bottleneck going forward. 8GB is cutting it close which is why it's a worth while upgrade because you'll avoid the issue all together because of it because you're being proactive. If the price is right, I would advocate for 2x8GB sticks. If I were to upgrade my 4x4GB, I would probably go to 4x8GB so I would have the option of maxing it out in the future should the need ever to arise. I don't think I would pay more for faster memory though. Overclocking is fun but, anything beyond 1600 without an iGPU doesn't get you a whole lot so I would probably go for something like this if I were to ever upgrade: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148659 That's just me though.

I upgraded to 16 GB a while back. Another 8 GB of DDR3 would be around $45- $50 so that's not too much. I doubt you will need more than 16 GB for gaming due to the consoles being limited to 8 GB and only 4-5 GB used for the game itself. If you are thinking about keeping your rig as it is for more than this console cycle then I couldn't even guess what the next gen consoles will cause us to require but I imagine you will be on a new CPU and mobo and on DDR4 by then probably.

Edit: oops I just noticed what kind of RAM you're running so it would be a bit more than $50 unless you caught a good sale. I would still do it though.

Yeh, I can get another two sticks of the same for 50 pounds so I may just do that when I get the 970.

I do not see a problem with that at all considering that the GPU has its own VRAM although i would recommend spending the 45$ and buy another 8GB of RAM. Let me know how this does work out for you though because i have 8GB of RAM and a GTX 750ti FTW and would be interested in upgrading.

I upgraded from 2x3 Gb ram to 2x8 Gb, i sold the old ram on ebay.
I also have an GTX 970 and easely got to 8Gb Ram used in Blender but not in games.
I have 5Gb usage in Cities Skylines, 4Gb in Battlefield 3 multiplayer, 5Gb in Dying Light, all this with browser open.
