Ok Ben I read the first 3 pages and still don't get this. I got a couple of questions....actually just one, do you have a wifi signal in your room? If yeah...then go out buy a pci wi-fi card for your main rig (if you don't have one) plug that into the comp, take your router (wired) plug it into your computer, and start plugging other computers into that router. Don't forget to bridge the two connections. Done and done.

This confused me lol.
Excuse me while I throw up

Why does he need a PCI card when his router can pick up wireless.

Ah something I didn't know....wait, does he have two wireless routers now? Cause if you have a comp in your room....with a wireless card then connect the comp to the wired router and bridge them you have a connection.

OK,I have a router downstairs, but I can't get a very good signal from it half the time. What I want to know is if I buy an additional router, can I link it wirelessly to the one downstairs? This is so I can use an Ethernet cable to provide access to the net. Is it possible?

Ben

From this I understand he has:

He has one wireless router downstairs.
He also has a PCI wireless card for compy upstairs, but his signal sucks ass.

So what he really needs is something to boost the signal between his upstairs computers and the downstairs rig with the internet/wireless router.

What you are trying to achieve is a *** Wireless Point-to-point BRIDGE ***

The devices need to provide a wireless distribution service (WDS) and be able to forward DHCP and gateway information to a MULTITUDE of devices on the "far" side.

Here's a diagram of your current set up, where "-" is hardwire and "..." is wireless

(your router) - (PC) - (other devices) .... laptops

What you want is

(router) - (PC) - (other) ... (router) - (other PCs) - (other stuff)

UNFORTUNATELY, most routers CANNOT do this. You needs a WDS compliant Access Point that can do Bridge mode.

Therefore your setup will be:

(router) - (stuff) - (AP) ... (AP) - (router) - (stuff)

The Access Points make the bridge (its a special mode) that then LINKS the whole separate network segments together.

Take a look at NETGEAR WG102, WAG102, WG302. (Avoid WAG302 it's very buggy and has cost be 2 working days to solve = replace the device with a WG302). There are other devices out there also. Those are just a suggestion to get you started. Polaris573 gave a nice tip. Perhaps use a third party firmware to BUST OPEN your router for new features. If you cannot make your existing routers work (they WONT out of the box... just doesnt have the feature set) then you need to buy two new devices. You can go on ebay and pick up 2 x WAG102 for about $100, or EUR 80. Good luck

NOTE: a wireless "g" network is GREAT for internet and streaming music or remote control or gaming. It can even stream video. BUT FORGET IT for transferring CDs or DVDs of data. It just isnt fast enough. If you need LOTS of bandwidth, you have to go by wire.

Hope that helps :)

Do you have a diagram of this?

Agreed on the bandwidth part. Wireless is only ever good for the internet. I have 108mb/sec and I dont even use network capabilities. USB thumb drives are just so more convenient and faster.

See but if he's wireless sucks that bad, that wouldn't be smart unless he got a better wifi router/receiver. Why not go with a booster and linking the comp with his upstairs stuff? I mean unless he really wants to make it complicated...

Something myself and d44ve have shot back and forth with Ben this whole morning.

1 & 2 = connected to hub (would only be able to access #3 through samba/windows net sharing)
3= folding rig with Wireless adapter, hub connected, and ICS enabled
4= wireless router
5= downstairs rig

Thank you goes to ex_reven for the pic.

If stronger signal needed put a booster in between router and rig #3.

I thought all the other comps that didn't have wireless were in his room? Are his parents saying he can't have wires in his own room . Anyways, best thing to do really would be wires....but booster works to, and I saw someone mention using the power lines?

Sorry. Misunderstanding.

No wires between upstairs and downstairs.
He can have his 4 upstairs computers wired into a hub though. But I dont think he is allowed to run those wires out of his room to a wireless AP to get better reception...

Ok this is getting much clearer. What about something like this...

Wireless router -> repeater -> comp with wifi in room (via network bridge) -> hub -> all other computers

Something like that. You'd have to wait for ben to come online.
He probably wants to pick the colour of the repeater or something else random :p

OK, I'll draw diagrams to make it easier for you, to know the layout of the house... sorry about the crap writing

That should give you a better idea of the layout. There are no plug sockets between router and my systems, so a rangebooster is pretty much not available. HOWEVER, I'm asking my dad tonight if I can run a cable up the stairs, and in exchange he doesnt have to give me the £20 he owes me from 2 years ago.

He probably wants to pick the colour of the repeater or something else random :p

How did you know?
