You need to go into the afterburner.cfg file and edit the value for [unofficialatioverclocking] by changing the value to 1. There are also two other values in there for voltage control to change to 1.

Sweet.. Thanks erocker!

I'll see if I can squeeze any more out of it tonight :toast:

AHH NECROMANCY! Lol.

@BYJA. Yeah, me too. Using MSI afterburner to set fan @ custom curve and card crashes. (Stock BIOS never sets fan higher than 76%. Card artifacts before fan goes higher).

Card will crash once it heats up enough for the fan to go to a higher value with the custom setting. Not always right away, but it always does. Tested setting fan @ 100% manually w/MSI AB, same result.

Also using F8 bios. Interesting to note, card ignores BIOS fan settings. Modified BIOS fan curve w/RBE and card acts as if stock. (76% fan MAX)

Perhaps Gigabyte knows the card cannot run the fan any higher, and so disabled bios fan control. My CCC couldn't set it either. MSI Afterburner is the only prog i've tried that can set the fan.

Hi guys is anyone getting a higher voltage setting with flashing a different bios? If i flashed the msi or sapphire ones would the voltage change or stay the same (1.088 i think)? I want to push it a bit more on air.

I flashed mine with the gigabyte 5870 ultra durable bios and the card is stable to 975/1125, sold the card to a friend but its been running like that for about 1yr no problems. And yes it does up the voltage to the GPU. The voltages in RBE are 1.15 and 1.063 with the 5870 bios. the voltages are 1.088 with the f5 bios for R585OC.

Don't bother flashing your card to get higher voltage. Use MSI Afterburner.

the 5850OC is NOT a reference design card so MSI AfterBurner will not work. The only way to get higher voltages is to flash the card, the gigabyte 5850 and 5870 UD cards are identical and flashing the 5850 with the 5870 will work the best IMHO.

Afterburner works with some non-reference designs. Have you tried to see if it works?

I did and it won't with this particular card, I have since moved to a gigabyte 6950 its reference and does work with MSI AfterBurner although due to a recent punkbuster update i can't run AB with BFBC2 or I get a hard lock. But the 5850OC cannot be voltage controlled by AB because of it's non-refence design. The GB 5850 and 5870 UD are identical cards and the extra voltage from the 5870 Bios definitely helped my 5850 Overclock a bit more.

The design itself doesn't matter. What matter is what voltage controller it is using. Afterburner gets updated to use different voltage controllers, therefore it's worth a try using the latest version. If not, use Radeon Bios Editor and change the load voltage values to whatever.

Exactly and this ref-design doesn't use adjustable controllers. Why not read this thread from the beginning like I did and you'll understand this particular card better. this review http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1811&pageID=8621 is for the 5870 card which is identical to the 5850oc, states my points.

Hey guys i found a review in polish that said they could adjust the voltage of the non-reference 5850 with OC guru version 1.0 (Not the latest one). I have tried it and theres an option to increase the voltage but i dont think its kicking in. Heres the review if anyone is interested in reading it.
