Nvidia to counteract the 6990 with GTX590

580 consumes 30-40 watts more on average than a 6970. Not that big a diff.

Double it and it's actually rather significant. The problem is enhanced by the latest gen scaling exceptionally well in xfire. I'd bet the 590 really does struggle to pull ahead if it even can, and it would take a miracle for them to be even is power usage. I'm starting to think this is meant to just be an nvidia fan's alternative to the 6990 rather than a superior performer. And that works just fine. If I had the money I'd rather get the 590 than a 6990. Until AMD stops being stubborn assholes and add per application support I'm sticking with nvidia. I mean it's just such an obvious feature and one people have requested for ages.

SLi GTX560 scales about 30-35%, crossfire HD6850 scales about 35-40%. So I don't really see the GTX590 outperforming the HD6990.

its quite a bit more then 30-35% in sli with the 560. and the 590 is using GF110 not GF114. and GTX570 and 580 are up at like 70 to 80% scaling, maybe more

Thats 96% scaling right there with the 560Ti in sli

idk crossfire scaling was better with the 4k series than sli with the gtx 200 series and even still the 295 was faster than the 4870x2 by quite a bit. it will really come down to what they do with clockspeeds on the 590 and 6990 as each core on the 590 will be faster than each core on the 6990. so if nv doesn't criple the clockspeeds the 590 cold be faster

i know it's [H] but it's the ony review I could find comparing them in sli and cfossfire. scroll down to the apples to apples comparison. and while the game matters alot, I can see dual 580's being faster overall. and dual 570's being faster overall compared to dual 6950's. from ther i do see the 590 being faster than the 6990.

Meh, neither of these dual GPU cards are going to be worth the price. I suppose when some new games come out that require this kind of power, but right now there's nothing. I'll gladly wait until the end of the year.

Fact. It'll be interesting to see some new dual-gpu cards, and seeing both nVidia and ATI releasing them within days of eachother will be pretty epic, but at the end of the day, they're going to be far too expensive.... even by "enthusiasts" standards.

It doesn't matter to me which is fastest. I'll not budge from my 580 until Q4. It has given me complete satisfaction in fps, noise and temp compared to my crossfired 5850's.

On a 24" monitor i have no need for dual gfx.

..not to say i wont drool if they're both awesome..

no need to ditch it then even dual 580's will likely be faster than this card if history tells us anything so you can wait for a while and then pick up a second 580 for cheap and it'll likely be as fast as the next series fastest single gpu card.

That's not true, a lot of people get there stuff this time of year with tax return. And if i get any thing before that time is because i have saved change over the last year which some times does got to the gas \ electric bill \ or a game or 2. Although this year it went to a new sound card which was on sale.

And if the government did get away by stopping tax return which they are still trying to do i would have no chance of getting a new system ever 2-4 years.

Yeah but Q4 2011 should bring the 'next' gen shrink to 28nm. Hopefully means same performance for a lot less power, or same power requirement with a lot more performance.

6990 ~ mid march.
