The problem is that Crysis did not live up to expectation for the performance hit. Thus, general rule was that it was a poorly optimized game. This is do to the fact that CF does not scale properly in Crysis while SLI works perfectly fine (something we all should know by now). Also, mods starting coming out claiming better visuals with slight bump in frame rates. This only added fuel to the already out of control flames. Take the following pics as an example:
Below is the retail version of Crysis (what many claimed to be the best graphics ever!)
Below is the level of graphical detail possible when you play Crysis using CCC with TOD and colorgrading

Now that you can see what Crysis is from a retail stand point and what Crysis could have been through modding you begin to understand the frustration. Had Crysis look like it's modded counterpart would people complain about frame rates or resolution? Hard to say really. However, when you realize that Crysis could have been better graphically (as it already had the stigma of being the best graphical game ever) had it had more development time before release may have changed people's outlook of the game. Also, take note that the increase visuals are available for both DX9 to DX10.
Lets be clear about something, modding a game is intended to only enhance your enjoyment a game. It should never be a means to show what a game should have been.
In a nutshell if a developer is creating a graphically eye pleasing game using a top notch storyline then the expectations of such a game becomes high, very high. For example, Bioshock (and others) fit such a description and sold very well on both PC and console. Funny thing was:
-it didn't have the level of AA quality some are accustom to because it used a deferred rendering method
-issues with the number times it could be installed (which was changed later on)
-issues with how they defined widescreen (which was changed later on)
It didn't stop it from winning awards and being top selling game of it's time. But lets not forget most of all that Bioshock did require high end PC to run it max @ 1920x1200 at consistent 60 FPS or better. However, it wasn't necessary to have such a high frame rate to maintain some level of smoothness. Therefore, a mid-range PC could run it depending on in game settings, cpu/gpu OC settings, etc.
