or you can get them off of ebay or buy oem or refurbs with a risk, of course retail is kinda blurred when buying a graphics card retail at the local bestbuy will set you back an extra 30-70$ compared to online, not to mention tax which as a whole is more expensive than shipping rates. lol
so getting a component cheap is really only a matter of shopping around.
edit:
and oh trog usually 4 lanes are fster than 2 lanes because whne an old granny driving in the far right is only going 12mph on a two lane you have alot of congestion as everyone has to pass her or get bogged down by those going slower than you but faster than the granny. on a fourl ane you have enough room to get around the granny without slowing down as those going slower than you but faster than the granny will use the next lane over instead of the faster lan on the far left. (as well as the middle left lane for those going slightly faster than the guy who's using the middle right lane to pass the granny.) in this way when going from point a to point b will be easier on a 4 lane road than a 2 lane. and i just listed one slow driver that's not including semi's, busses, break happy joes ect.
(okay can't really relate it to the gpu issue but I thought your highway analogy needed some refinemeant. lol)
