30% sounds like a lot .. probably more than you need, as long as you have an OS with TRIM (Windows 7+)
My C: ssd .. and it's not that slow.
Oh and only writes are affected by limited disk space on SSD, reads will always be the same speed no matter how full the drive.

+1: Another option could be just not filling your SSD.samsung have a tip in their software that if you parition it with about 7% leftover, it prevents the slow downs and extends the wear of the drives.
It's pretty easy to just shrink the parition 5-10% manually (thats all the samsung magician software does) and keep the higher performance. the drive can still use un partitioned space temporarily, which prevents the performace losses of a full SSD.

Unless you have some links/evidence to support that, it is 'wonky voodoo'...30-40% is a HUGE number. You can also bench to your heart's desire on an SSD, HOWEVER, repeated (back to back) benching/testing WILL SLOW THEM DOWN. You can TRIM the drive between/after tests or if there is not data, reformat it, to bring it back to full speed (this is how OCZ told me to do it when reviewing their SSDs).Leave about 30-40% space free, and don't do more than three full speed tests every few months. I know that all sounds a bit wonky like voodoo.

I wasn't aware all the SSD allowed manual trimming as it were. I will give that a try myself.Running a manual TRIM on the drive will bring it right back where it needs to be performance wise... was my point... and what I posted/said. Running it multiple times in a month will not affect it as TRIM will run multiple times over the course of a month.
The Caviar Black is fine... good question though.
So, again, your links to show leaving such HUGE amounts (over say 10-20%) is remotely beneficial would be great to see considering that goes against anything else I have seen and tested the past 4 years. I could have missed something though. I have seen articles state up to 25% (which is high to me), but 40% is just insane (and a waste of cash)...not to mention, mine are about 80% full and still bench darn close (margin of error) to from its empty state (using ATTO/CDM, etc).

It's primarily helpful for load times though random reading is important too in CERTAIN games due to how much disk access they require. I doubt you'd come across them often, but it's a small bonus in those scenarios.Only load times.
