HD3870X2 is better

completely irrelevant fanboyism, please keep it out of this thread, and next time read the title.

and even so your point is highly debatable. if you want to debate it, start a new thread please.

8800 GTX + <Your OC here> is better.

Reviews are pretty divided, some show 9800 GTX to beat 8800 Ultra (though with insignificant leads) while others show it's a disappointment, that it's doing nearly the same as 8800 GTX. Since the prices of 8800 GTX are going down, I'd pick the EVGA 8800 GTX, give it a decent OC. End up with a better memory subsystem for the card. More means moar.

see in aus the 9800GTX is $400 flat, and the 8800GTX is anywhere from 550 to 700 AUD, so the 9800GTX is the far better choice, given that in most situations, which happen to be at or below 1920x1200 with some AA and AF, the 9800GTX wins. not to mention HUGE oc potential, especially with a vmod. even with a vmod, the 8800GTX would put out waaaaaay to much heat.

i will grant that with huge res, lots of AA and big texture games, the 8800GTX can have its advantages, but its just not worth the price and the heat.

Yeah, but he's from Iraq. Their prices are high in their markets but usually, the people make their acquaintances (or friends) who keep shuttling between the US and Iraq bring hardware from there. In the US, the 8800 GTX from EVGA price took a nose-dive. I've guided Hayder buy a Gigabyte 8800 GT in the past, and he got it for less than US $300 which isn't uncommon there considering other brands' 8800 GT costs like US $350+ by Iraq's market rates. So, the smart choice if you live in Iraq is that you make a few American friends, make them bring you hardware from America each time they go back home on a leave.

more or less teh consensus is that the 9800GTX is better, but if you already have an 8800GTX (or can get one realllly cheap) then there is no reason to upgrade to the 9800.

Don't mean to hijack this thread at all, but i saw someone mention they got an aftermarket cooler for the 9800GTX. So, what's a good after market cooler for the 9800 GTX? :D

Thermaltake DuOrb looks pretty compatible. The screw-holes on a 9800 GTX PCB resembles that of 8800 GTS G92. So the main unit has no problems fitting ; the kit includes heatsinks for memory and MOSFETs. 9800 GTX isn't part of the support list, but trust me, the 8800 Ultra (that's in the list) has a similar TDP to 9800 GTX, hence, this cooler shouldn't fall out. Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 8800 works great as well.

the 9800 is a G92 card, so most G92 coolers will fit. you could probably even get an accelero S1 on there, and slap a fan onto it.

I got two 9800 GX2's with DD Waterblocks for it. I haven't been able to install them in my rig yet or do anything with the cards, so it's just a game of patience.
