Here it is the dreaded heat issue. I recently did a big upgrade from a XP 3200+ and X800 XT 8XAGP (bios modded Pro VIVO), to a X2 4200+ and X800 XT PCI-E and have a quick question. As my other card didnt have the stock heatsink becuase I immediately bought the ATI Silencer 4 knowing I was going to mod it the the XT. Anyway this new card that I got has the stock cooler on it and when i first got it it was idling at about 54 celcius which I thought was a bit warm, so i reapplyed some great and reinstalled the HS. Now I have it down to 44 celcius which is still a bit warm but I can handle it. When I launch games or the ATI Tool artifact scan it will crawl up to 83 degrees celcius in about 3 minutes but will never go higher no matter how long i run it. I touch the HS and its very warm almost hot. I'm wondering if this is normal and if not, how much it would most likely drop if I installed another VGA Silencer 4 on it? Seeing I never had the stock cooler on the last one I dont know how much it made a difference. I do know however that card would never go over 62 Celcius after heavy gaming. Any help or input would be very appreciated. One last question before I go, please look at my specs below on my rig and let me know if you feel I'm pulling off a decent HL2 stress test score.

Well yes everything is tight, I'm not a noob to the computer and Video card scene, however I will admit I didnt have any AS5 available as I lost it during my move, so I used the mediocre stuff you get with the VGA Silencer and I maybe applied a tad less the normal because I ran out of it. But after seeing 42 on idle I felt it most be working because that about avg. Would it really make that big of a difference during gamplay?

my x850 runs less than 60c at full load with the artic cooler.. at idle your card is doing nothing it only has to work in 3d mode so it would make a big difference during gameplay..

i also used the mediocre stuff that came with the cooler.. i dont think its that medicore to be honest.. he he

they aint gonna bugger up their nice cooler with crap tim now are they.. think about it.. he he

neither are zalman.. i used their tim as well on my cpu cooler..

I have an ATI x850xt pe pci-e and it keeps overheating when gaming. What is this artic cooler that you talk about? Is it better than the stock? I have pulled the side of the case off to try and help, which has helped a little. I am idling at 45c now with just this browser open. I tried to turn the fan up with ATITool 0.25 Beta 14 but that hasn't done much other than make a lot of noise.

The only thing that I can find is: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=5
If this is the right thing please let me know.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

42 idle isn't bad but I would expect it from a stock heatsink/fan, not an aftermarket one. i get about 31 idle with a Zalman but my ambient temp at my house is 60(farhenheit) not celsius. I don't know how to convert. :(
