So I was talking to friends and the usual PC conversation popped up, I was saying how I'll be doing the odd job and will be getting some money, we joked about having a fund for me for a new card, and I mentioned that I would be getting a 1GB Sapphire 4870 Vapor-X which here retails for 215 euro and it's only 150 euro in the US, pretty big savings, but not only that, Newegg has a greater selection than I do so I was having a look around.

The design and colour of a card is a big deal to me, theme is a big deal, I don't want to have a red card in a black/blue themed case, but it also has to be quiet in idle.

I'm looking for people's opinion on these cards, the pros and cons of them. Read a review of the 4870 Vapor-X and the website said it was the best 4870 they have seen and it cooled very well and was quiet, a Newegg review said it was too hot and loud. A lot of review websites praise a card where a normal user wouldn't, I'd like to hear opinions from someone here rather than just a reviewer or some guy on Newegg who is doing it wrong.

These are the cards I'm looking at, with the price it would cost me in brackets:

HIS 4850 (€111)
XFX 4850 (€122)
Sapphire 4850 Vapor-X (€126)
HIS 4850 IceQ4 (€144)
HIS 4870 (€148)
Sapphire 4870 Vapor-X (€150)
HIS 4870 IceQ4+ Turbo (€150)

I really like the Vapor-X cards, but after seeing the XFX cards I've kind of changed my mind and I've always had a thing for the HIS cards. I'm down for any of the cards and they are all a good price, I'd like to hear opinions on any of the cards.

Cards will be used for BluRay/HD-DVD with some occasional gaming, but I like maxing out things, will be using 1920x1200. But it's not really what I use them on, mainly how the cards do.

With your game playing res being 1920 x 1200 I'd go for either of the 4870's. The bandwidth of the GDDR5 on the 70's will be more valuable to your needs in the long run and cost wise why not throw in a extra 30-40 bucks for the next best thing.

I like the 4850 iceQ4 better, but as you say you are gaming @1920 x 1200, so go for the vapor-X 4870..

I added the HIS 4870 IceQ4+ Turbo to the list as it's currently a reasonable price, it's a very, very nice looking card, currently reading people's reviews.

i build a rig with the HIS 4870 1GB ICEQ turbo for my bro, dont get me wrong, the card delivers great performance and is rock stable, but the fan is pretty loud compared to the 4850 ICEQ he had before that, temps under load do not go above 65 though....

When setting fan speed manually to 35% where its silent, the card gets very very hot....

Also it doesnt clock itself down when in idle....

I dont want to risk a bios flash since it works flawlessly now, but its prob the first time i bought a card with custom cooling and was underwhelmed.

SO when you do get a 4870 1gb, vapor x might be the better choice, also cause its delivered with stock 750mhz speed on the core, the HIS ICEQ turbo goes at 770 and thats pushing the 4870 cards when looking at the temps.

yeah, the fans on th 4870s can be quite loud . . . but I don't find it to be annoying or distracting . . . actually, it kinda has a soothing hum to it :p

but, they cool extremelly well - these are the first GPUs I've had from ATI that have yet to break 75C . . . no matter how hard I push them.

Persoanlly, I'd go for either the Vapor X or the ICEQ4

ah dont worry about color not matching up with your case DaveK. In my opinion performance matters infinitely more. besides its a video card that tucked safely inside your case where others probably won't see. unless your planning on opening up the case to show to everyone who comes to your house o_O then that might be a problem. xD

Well, there's a side window on the Antec 900 and I like to see the inside and show it off :p

This sucks lol, 2 really nice cards at the same price, still leaning towards the HIS card though lol it's so nice looking.
