i was wondering what kinda performance difference there is between the 8800gts 512mb card and the newer GTX260/280 cards. is it like 2x?

i have seen the reviews and benches but i want to hear from people who own the cards.

hows overclockability?

I've had pretty decent luck OC-ing my first GTX260, it was a 192SP Vanilla EVGA. It would get up to 756/1556 1300 iirc. Or close to it from a stock 566/1242 1000.

I will say it again and again, from what I've found from a few major GTX MFG's, the Pre-OC'd versions have nothing different but CLOCK speeds. With the new 216SP versions, I noticed it's running lower voltage for 3D (DVD/Movie/HD) and EXTRA (3D Gaming). My original card ran at 1.12v for those settings, my new 216SP version runs at 1.06v. I've yet to OC my new card beyond GTX260 FTW clocks, as I don't need it, but my temps are a few degrees cooler. Also 75A% fan speed is a sweet spot I've found for noise/cooling performance.

8800GTS 512's are great cards I know (not from experience), and OC pretty well. Still pretty damn powerful for many today. I'm actually installing one in a friends' build that I got for $99 off of EVGA B-Stock...it should be here Tuesday, you better believe I'm gonna play with it!

:toast:

I really liked the 2 8800gts 512's that I've owned. They certainly can't touch my 260gtx, but still more than capable of running almost all games on high/max.

but how do they directly relate as far as performance? i mean... are the GTX cards like 80% better then the 8800s or are they just enough better to charge more money?

The G92 8800GTS should be about 70% as fast as a 192SP 260GTX, as the 192SP 260GTX is around 25% quicker than a 9800GTX, if I remember correctly.

your card is only 1 gen behind if that at all, stop worrying and wait another generation or 2 before you upgrade

have you looked at my system specs?

Here you go my man, this is for the Zotac Amp! 216SP 260GTX, check out the res that best suits you and off you go. :toast:

I was incorrect, my quoted stats are more suited towards the 216SP 260GTX vs 9800GTX+, either way, not so bad :)

Edit: And I have to say, these GTX+ cards are pretty damn good for the price you pay, as they run very cool with stock cooler AND OC damn well (look at my SysSpecs and you'll see!) on the stock cooling :)

Basically, I think two 8800GTS 512MB's in SLI will usually beat a non-overclocked GTX 260. The performance increase from the GTX 260, comparing that and the 8800GTS 512MB and both at stock speed, would probably usually be 35-75% at best.

Check out my OC and 3dmark06 scores with a EVGA 260GTX

I love the card it very nice, clean look. Temps, for me atleast, are 49~ Idle and 60C load even OCing doesnt raise it much. I can run 24/7 729 core/1458 shader/1300mhz memory

One thing you must know is that when OCing the card the Shader has to be double the Core clock amount or else u see wacky number in benchmarks.

I've used and been through countless cards and by far the GTX260 is one that has impressed me the most and the one im keeping.

2x gts512 beat gtx260

Personally i'd say no, not because of performance but because of the hassles of SLI and if you think of it shader wise, a single GTX280 equals about two 8800GTS's, the SLI has 16 more shaders but thats not alot.. and considering you need SLI drivers, power for it etc.

Every videocard review on this website has a long list of reference cards and are tested in many games and 3dmark. I suggest reading a 260 review and to look at the graphs.

i have read the reviews. im sick of them.

i want to hear "my gtx280 is WAY better than my 2x 8800gts's"

or

"my gtx280 is only a marginal upgrade from my 9600gt's."

Going to a gtx 280 from 2 8800gt in sli is a waste of money...You want tell that much of a difference in games...not worth the price.

The difference is big but not double. My GTX 260 is currently overclocked by 15% and stable. They overclock quite well.

One item to keep in mind, are the test results a melded mix of DX9 and DX10 apps? In DX10 the new cards do much better than the G92 cores.

@HeavyH20:

It is an overall fps rating from all the following games.

# Direct3D-9-Benchmarks

* Call of Duty 4
* Clive Barker's Jericho
* F.E.A.R.
* Gothic 3
* Rainbow Six Vegas
* Stalker
* Unreal Tournament 3

# Direct3D-10-Benchmarks

* Assassin's Creed
* Bioshock
* Call of Juarez
* Company of Heroes
* Crysis
* Lost Planet
* World in Conflict

well this is exactly why i made this thread. i dont game. only benchmark.

My 280gtx gets just over double the vantage marks that my 9800gtx does. And a 9800gtx is basically a faster 8800gts 512.

I just upgraded to the GTX280 from the 8800GTS g92.

My sig has a screen shot of benches for the 8800. Dont have screen shots for the GTX280, but its scoring 20K on stock air cooling. So it is faster then my overclocked and watercooled 8800GTS by about 4000 3dmarks. Once OC'd the GTX280 should hit 22K or 23K. So not 2x the performance but a pretty big improvement.

The big difference is running high res. the GTX280 is 2x as fast as 8800GTS in resolutions at and above 1600x1200.

how well does a gtx280 do single card with a quad core in vantage?

Im not a lucky owner of vantage. I would think it scales much the same as in 3dmark06 and probably even a little better in favor of the gtx280.

Apparently about 14k as live or die and cold storm got in our vantage thread. W/ some serious tweaking and cooling I'd say about 16k. W/ the new drivers I expect I'm somewhere around 9k w/ my gts and conroe dual. If I vmodded and used water or something I could likely do well over 10k.

so my e8600 at 5ghz would get about...? and a q9650 at 4.6ghz?
