WHY do people DO this ? They pit them on for a reason it is not like they do not need them if this was the case they would just make them an option .

- Because they CAN!
- Because it decreases temps
- Because they were put on for the sole reason that those eternal mongrels that put PC's together without thinking don't chip or crush cores
- Because it's fun

That picture shows that happens when you OC an i7 and run out of liquid nitrogen.

They pit them on for a reason
I'm not so sure they pit (make them dip in the middle) for a reason. I think it is a consequence of "safest" construction methods. You "aim" for a perfectly flat, but IF there is an error, it must be a pit, not a bump, else mounthing the cooler will cause compression on the silicon and likely damage the CPU.

Surly the reasoning because you can is false as you can see this person did not do it very successfully at all. they are there to protect the cores ! and it is not all that " FUN " once you f up it is not all that fun!
Just dumb IMHO f'ing up a sweet CPU for what ? :slap:

It is fun if you have a logical and sound plan on removing it

he didnt do it successfully because he was doing it to see if the core was soldered on.

the core was soldered on so he destroyed a dead pproc which s fine and its even better now that the rest of the world knows so now less procs will die and people will come up with new ways to remove the IHS.

they are their to protect the cores as stated in the post above yours...but also stated is that the only reason they are their is to protect core cracking from moron 13 year ods that dont know wtf even pressure is.

removing the ihs serves an amazing purpose and that is removing 5+c from the corem which could be VERY important ESPECIALLY when it comes to i7 as they run incredably hot.

IMHO it is not worth the 5c in temp decrease . Get a better HSF and some AS5 !

It's fun because it's risky. If it was easy and without risk, there would be no tension involved and no fun when it succeeds.
Overclocking doesn't do that much to your "real-life" computer experience, but there's lots of people who think it's fun just to do it, otherwise communities like TPU wouldn't even exist, would they?

So yeah, this particular one was a f-up, but it was most likely a heck of an experience. Plus the person who did it learned something valuable, and so did a lot of people who read the posts concerning this.

If all you want is safety, you shouldn't mess with a comp at all imho.

I think Over clocking is fun as hell but come on taking a soldered IHS off is just dumb IMHO . I even tryed it with a AMD 4000+ and KILLED IT ! what a waste ! I do not care I will never ever do it again too risky for me . :slap:

You obviously did it the wrong way. Hey if you don't mind the risks and won't regret killing the chip, go for it. Your only saying it's stupid is because you regret doing it. You knew the risks before you tried to remove the IHS right? well it went bad and 'crap occurs'.

The advice you need to be giving is don't do it unless you are prepared to lose the chip.

I did it 6 years ago on an old celeron 400 and worked fine for me, but i wouldn't do it now even with my old E2180. but when i am ready to replace my chip i will give it a go just for kicks and to see what i can get from it.

Also the reason they put them on is only to stop people crushing the cores by improper application of the HSF. I remember when the Durons (i think it was) came out that had no IHS and were excellent overclockers

not a waste if it works, if it doesnt work then you werent smart enough to think it out.. most of the people who remove ihs's always succeed because your supposed to think about it first. i tried to be open minded people do what they do perhaps you could think the same.

trickson - is is dumb to remove a ihs, i think not, well maybe if you dont know what you are doing and fuk it up, but i guess its no different to many things in life some ppl drive cars at 200km, some ppl jump out or planes, some ppl remove IHS

its human nature to want to explore and find out things and take risks

**also rember the cpu WAS DEAD b4 he pulled it apart and there was no warranty becaus eit was a engeneering sample, so why not see what happens its only going to be thrown into the bin anyway**

i take riskier risks than taking off IHS's every day yesterday i my GF was joking with me and uled her hair off my shoulder she pretended to get mad and asked me who's it was...i told her i had been cheating on her with my motherboard.....she was not amused.....today she asked me how her hair looked right before she went to work...i took my fingure licked it and fixed a spot on her hair....this was a mistake apparently their was supposed to be nohting wrong with it..remember fellas their is never anything wrng with it.

Nice line ? What are you insane nothing he can say now is going to be good enough . Dude this is what you need to do , go out and get some diamond ear rings with a card saying how much you love her now if you do not have the cash to do this then get some flowers although not as good as diamonds they work . If you care about your sanity this is what you will do !
You about as dumb as a bag of diapers man :nutkick: liking your fingers and " Fixing her hair " :nutkick::nutkick::nutkick::nutkick: good god man my wife gets her hair done every 2 weeks and GOD forbid I don't say WOW you look so sexy because I made that mistake ONCE MAN ONLY ONCE ! Kinda like taking off the IHS on the 4000+ I had !

I think its do able.

1. Take drimal cut around where the cores would be.

2. Frying pan/CPU paste/Stove

3. IHS falls off

4. Cut sides down, but not all the way for protected transistors.( They put some on the corners where you normally take a razor blade)

5. No IHS on the die:)

Couldn't you just super freeze the IHS and have it fall off the CPU ? like take a drop of liquid nitrogen or dry ice and freeze if off ?

They shoudl feel lucky you even notice there damn hair. most of the time my eyes are fixed about 15" down (depending on the hight of the woman)
I'm lucky my wife doesn't mind if i say she looks like crap (in a tactful way). Anyway this is way O.T.

I think the basic rule should be don't remove it unless you don't mind losing it, even "professionals" make mistakes.

Sorry Solaris, i didn't mean any offence. it was just in jest.

Your right it is give and take, they give you a hard time and you take them to the hairdressers. :toast:
