Power Supply Rosewill 750w
Okay, SO. I got this new power supply from Newegg. It's a Rosewill 750w. http://www.rosewill.com/products/698/productDetail.htm

I recently had issues with a different mobo and had to RMA it. So we figured, hey lets get a new PSU too. So it all arrived today. I put in my CPU, the heatsink, some Corsair RAM, and my new shiny power supply. Figured I'd test it before I put any more time into putting my computer back together. Plug it in, BAM! Giant pop and giant spark from the power supply. Is this just a bad PSU, or could something else have caused it?

But really, my biggest worry, what are the chances that the power supply could have caused damage to the mobo, RAM, or CPU?

Your first mistake was buying a Rosewill.
OCZ, Corsair, PCP@C are among the best. You don't ever want to skimp on a PSU.

Something like this happened?

Yes, bad PSU. Never heard about Rosewill... but I agree with Woody. Stick to well known brands.
Your other hardware should be fine imho, but I am not 100% sure. But I tend to say that nobody else was hurt. Of course you have to check yourself.

Chances of your psu damaging your other parts is low, but certainly possible

Rosewill is Cheapo, buy corsair or antec

I have a Tagan, and even after accidentally shorting it out (more than once) wiring up some LEDs, still works perfect.

PC P&C / Corsair / Antec takes my vote. PSU's are the most important of a computer so don't buy any poor quality ones. The only component Rosewill makes that good is cases (dunno if it counts as a component).

Yeah, there are about 5 brands that I'll even consider. Don't mess with cheap power supplies, ever.

Its not THAT low. Get a new one ASAP and if anything is busted call Rosewill. Also I agree with these guys go with known brands. The best Iv ever used is Enermax. However I recommend you read the PSU guide here. Its like a PSU Bible!

Buy Newton Power PSU's. I have been using the same one from 2000, and its 90watts. Blows out very cool air all the time, and the PSU which is small btw, never really gets warm.

Now of course don't buy 90watts, just saying that newton seems to be perfect.

I don't think Newton makes any power supplies that go over 300 watts. So that's epic phail. :D

Crap, i think you are right. What is the best long lasting for years PSU BRAND?

Question: For my secondary rig which i plan to buy soon, i bought a brand new Dynex 350 PSU, its for a backup, because the new rig is prebuilt so it already comes with one, but is Dynex safe.

Btw, everyone i found this site, they still sell newton, don't know if the site is safe or not, so be wary.

I had a thought I remembered form my appliance delivery days. Beings its winter in the states, assuming thats where you are from, did you allow time enough for the PSU to get to ambient temperature before you plugged it in?

A bit of condensation in the wrong place and pow they will pop as described!

OMG... are they owned by Firestone??? lol I work at firestone and it's 80% gross profit "money money money money money"

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. We got our hands on a spare PSU from my dad's work. Luckily it seems like no harm was done to the components. When it blew it actually tripped the breaker for the entire room. That kinda made testing new PSUs really complicated until we figured out we had no power.

Actually, (believe it or not) the newer rosewill power supplies are actually supposed to be pretty good. I never would have believed it myself, but the reviews say differently. Even guys like JonnyGuru give some of their newer models exceptionally high marks. Don't assume that your power supply failed simply because people tell you that at particular Rosewill product is substandard. Even good quality products fail sometimes.
