New Anti-Virus needed for a gamer

I'm not really a hardcore, 24/7 gamer but I have my moments of need, and with a sh** PC, I need every bit of spare resource I can get. Currently I'm using Norton 360 and I'm not too pleased with it's results so I'm looking for a new one. I know that low resource eaters are NOD32 and AVG but I'm not too sure which one to take. So please, help me decide which anti-virus is best for me.

Of course, if you know a better AV then suggest it.

Yup Ive used nod32 for years with no probs and it always comes up trumps if something ive dl'ed is a infected.
Also its very light on resources.

Sadly not im borrowing it from england, but we just invented the bow and arrow which im happy about....now i dont have to run after my food.

But nod32 is good and i used avg for years previously no probs there either either one and your good

I use Avast Free.
O'course. I just disable the whole damn package when I'm gaming. No reason to check for viruses when I'm fragging the shat outta people, imo.

NOD32 = Highest Detection Rate.


Take it from someone who deals with around 5-15 computers a week with AVG *average home user*, 95% of them come in massively infected...

Computers I send out with Nod32, under 5% ever come back infected.
Had about the same numbers with Kaspersky.

Norton/Trend/Macfee will give good results but only because you will block you lan connection with the firewall or your system will be too slow to ever load a virus. LOL

Now depending on how smart you are and what you do / don't do, I have run computers myself for years without an antivirus and never gotten a virus.

wow, NOD32 really? god guys go freeware these days. paying for something for protection is pointless.

for Anti-Virus go for AVAST!, AVG Basic Edition, or Avira AntiVir Personal.

for Spyware go for Spybot, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or SUPERAnti-Spyware.

Avira is pretty good but its heavy in the false positives, and honestly hasn't been around long enough for me to trust them.

Nod32 (60mb) and shockingly NAV 2009 (55mb) are very light on resources. AVG free is fairly heavy (+85mb) on resources.

Id get avg 7.5 not 8 you can shut it down when you want to game you cant with 8 and some of the others mentioned

AVG sucks period regardless of the version. i hated it. so what's with all the disabling i keep reading? what's up guys? disabling while playing a game? if you have more the 4GB or heck even 2GB you are fine. well, this is just coming off me and my opinion.

note: to stay away from Viruses and spyware

-don't open any E-mail that is miss leading. simply as don't open any if you don't know the person or website

-don't open ADs off of any site unless you know the site is known to be safe

-don't download Torrents that are miss leading such as when you're going to choose to download a App. like Microsoft ord and it like 987Kbp DON"T download it as it may be a Virus/Spyware

-don't download Apps. from a none known site

Need something just to comb out my PC.

I got a NOD32 (now) ,had Spybot Search & Destroy for a while now and CCleaner.
Now I'm installing Zone Alarm Firewall because so many people said it's good.

Is that good enough? Or would you recommend something else?


BTW If I'm using ZoneAlarm Firewall, can I turn off my Windows Firewall?
The OS is XP

I use kaspersky, but realtime protection is always disabled as I just right click > scan files. No point in wasting resources for gaming imo

I ran a computer I built for 6+ months with absolutely nothing, sadly i have harder time when I have an anti-virus installed.
