Please help me with choosing either ATI 4850 512mb or Nvidia GTS 250 512mb

i believe by the time physx takes hold, it will be time to upgrade again if it ever takes off that is.

Intel p-35 w/ich9r=Asus P5kR
With intel E4500 oc'd to 2.9ghz with a 8800gs Huh!!
I'm probably wrong but i don't believe you will see much of a difference with either card since i don't think your cpu is keeping up with your current setup-again i could be wrong-and if i am someone please correct me! Before you upgrade your video maybe you could upgrade your cpu and memory for about the same price-such as a q6600 or a q8400 or even a E8500

A gfx card will provide a bigger benefit in games than a cpu any day. His bottleneck will be mild, so he'll still see an improvement.

So a 533mhz increase in bus speed would be less beneficial (266mhz with pc-8500)
Than the increase of (and im guessing) about 27% in video power
Wile E? i'm sure you are right which is why i'm here-please help me understand? please

so my cpu is really a bottleneck?!!!! its at 2.90ghz. I dont believe that.

NO, it isn't a major bottleneck, it'll limit you a bit but not much, don't worry about it.

Ok this is why i suggested that, Before I fried it! I had a gigabye p-35 ds3r with a E4400 oc'd to 2.5ghz with G.Skill pc-8000 native pc6400(running at pc-8000 speeds 1000mhz) with a Ati HD2900 pro, Ran great and pretty fast but as i said it fried,so i bought a E6600 to replace the E4400,after i got the new cpu i was astonished with the increase in performance at stock speeds over my Oc'd E4400,while gaming (video just seems to flow better),It seems as though the E6600 just simply out performs the E4400 And now that pc has a 8800gtx and is oc'd to 2.592 ghz mem at 992mhz (its in my little girls room) and seems to be just keeping up fully with my 8800 so thats why i suggested that, as i said i am probably wrong

The GTS 250 generally has a little better performance overall than an HD 4850 plus lower power consumption and temperatures.

@Jeffredo, the 4850s have no problems at high temps.
@JCMSlob, are you sure it's not just that it has more cache etc etc?

I didn't say it had a problem with high temps per se. I said the GTS 250 has lower operating temperatures. I usually will go with the cooler running part all other things being equal.

Fair enough if you've got dodgy airflow or something it might heat up other components, however if it's got an exhaust on the back of the card there'll be very few it any problems with temps.

HEhehehehe, you fried it cause it was definitely not stable. Unstable hardware always performs slower as it is causing errors under load. That would be why you found the new cpu to be faster, since it wasn't stressed.

Remember to throttle back on your overclocks once you find the ceiling, if you don't your straining your hardware which may cause it to fail prematurely ;)

other point being

those with the 8800GTS 640 are enjoying things now thx to the additional Ram amt, same with the 8800GTX users (which still beat the 512MB GTS 512 stock for stock and then clock for clock.)

I have a 8800GTX and it's starting to show its age... (I also have a HD4850, 8800GT and 9800GT and I would take the 4850 over any of those that I've just listed which is pretty much the same shit as gts250)

I'm using an 8800 GTX and I wouldn't take any of those over it unless I was trying to fill up my house with similarly performing PCs. ;)

Palit card will be cooler as it's got the dual slot cooler, it's dual slot though so you may want to consider that if you have a bunch of other expansion cards attached to your mobo. The palit card overclocks pretty nicely, IDK about the HIS one as I've not been able to have a play with it.

so that palit one is dual slot cooler? it looks like an ordinary cooler. am i wrong??

and its not a stock one???

It's not a stock one no, it's a one that's been used by palit on several cards over the last few months. I can't find a review of either of them but I can tell you that the cooler on the palit card gets rid of the heat nicely, keeps mine under 50 degrees C under load with the fan at 100%, that is fairly loud though and these cards are designed to handle double my temperatures so you should have no problems if you want it to be a bit quieter.

I think i fried cause the cpu fan seized up (which brings up my absolute love for controller panels with alarms),and yes i do think it has a lot to do with going from 2 to 4 mb L2,and trust me if i would have been home when it happened i would have recognized the high pitched squeel that my old lady told me she heard for 3 hours before it "just shut off as she put it

I live in New Zealand. so my options are limited and things are more expensive.

I have an ordinary CRT monitor. and my max resolution is 1600*1200. and i dont use AA or AF in any games. maybe 2AA if the performance allows. I like to play at my native resolution. and AA or AF are not important to me.

ATI 4850 1GB costs $414 NZD. whereas a Palit AT 4850 or HIS 4850 512mb costs $305 NZD.

Geforce GTS 250 512mb costs $325 and the 1GB version costs $474 NZD

So you see the large price gap. and i cant afford those expensive prices.

So what do you think? Which card is ideal for me in this case??????

Thanks :).
get the 4850 512MB
the GTS 250 512MB is just a renamed GeForce 9800 GTX+

most of nvidias lineup is G92 based, most of ATIs lineup is RV770 based

crazy pyro: so u have card with the same fan as that? Does it have heatsink for the memory?

I dont mind the noise. i dont care how noisy it is. as long as it cools under load.and it costs only $305 so its a good price for my budget.

yeah. i will get the 4850 512mb. But i dont know why there is a huge price gap between the 512mb and 1GB. its totally unusual. isnt it?

that huge price gap isnt worth the few extra FPS that u would gain from having 1GB of memory.

I am wondering if Average fps is important or Min fps in games?? which are more important and should i look for????

eidairaman1: does ATI often release drivers which improve performance across the board for the the cards?
