I have a friend who does all kinds of nice thing for my kids and family and in return I would like to upgrade his processor for him he currently has a AM2 4000x2 cpu . He runs xp and has 4 gb of ram in the system. The mother board I used was a business type gigabyte motherboard with ati graphics and if I remember correctly is limited to the 95 watts cpus. He mainly surfs the web and muti tasks a lot, burns DVD's etc.. but doesn't game. Whats a decent, less than 100.00, cpu upgrade where he will see a difference in performance. Give me some impute . I have some ideas myself, but wanted to see what you think.

here are the two I'm looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103678
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103687 I'm assuming this has a ddr2 controller as well.

Hes doesn't use many multi threaded apps.

The Kuma's are not that much faster than the Windsors/[Brisbane, I'd get the Athon II 245/250 as they are based on an adapted Deneb architecture called Regor, it would be quite a bit faster than your mates old 4400 X2. However if you've got a £100 budget the Phenom II X3 710 can be had for $99.00.

And yes, the Athlon IIs have both DDR2 and DDR3 controllers, if you are prepared to wait about 2-3 weeks the athlon II X4 is being released and is said to be priced below $100.

I agree, i'd go with a Kuma ... very fast chip and pretty good overclocker

i've got mine overclocked to 3.2 on air

I have nothing against the Kuma's, but the Athlon IIs are cheaper and would spank it, they overclock way upto near 4 GHz on stock cooling, only 45 nm/65 watts. :)

Edit:

to clarify he won't be overclocking at all.

Clock for clock the Athlon II X2 is faster than the Kuma variant, so even @ stock speeds whilst running cooler so its the better choice.

But like I said, also consider to pick up the Phenom II X3 for $99 or wait 2 weeks for the Athlon II X4 which is rumoured to be a budget $100 quad core.

Yeah, I'd go with the x3 chip. Actually, I know where you can get one cheap. Send me a PM.
