Sapphire X800 GTO AGP overheating

I didn't order the Zalman. I ordered the ATI Silencer from Arctic Cooling. But the more i read the more I see that it probably won't fit my card without some modding.

How could a company (Sapphire) sell a card that cannot even run on its stock cooling? That just seems retarded! I can see that you would need to get aftermarket cooling if you were overclocking. But I'm not even doing that. I'm just trying to run a couple of games with the default clock settings and only the 12 pipelines enabled.

One good thing about this card is that I can unlock the 16 pipelines. This will be great if I can ever get it cool enough to actually run!

Somtimes the stock cooler can be improved to get much better results - the hardware landscape is littered with poor HS compound and application problems. Apple had a huge problem with powerbooks when they put way too much thermal compund on CPUs.

The stock cooler on my X800GTO has a lapping job not unlike glueing sand to metal... I have yet to "lap" and polish that (I was using a waterblock previously).

The airflow coming off of that stock cooler is minimal. I can see why it won't cool the GPU.

Hopefully that Arctic cooler will be in tomorrow and I'll be able to fit on my card. If not I guess I'm going to have to RMA the card. The cooler would cost more to restock than its worth so I'll have to eat the cost.

What do people suggest for a new AGP card on par with the X800 GTO?

If it dosen't fit, I have one that might fit. Its the cooler that was used on the X800pros. It looks like it would fit. Ill send it for free if you live in the US.

Right on man I'll let you know how it goes this weekend. I know the card that i have only has two holes in it that the current heatsink screws into. They are angled across the gpu from eachother. All of the pictures I've seen show 4 screws in the Heatsink.

Only the newer cards X1300 and up use 4 holes for mounting. The X800 us a 2 hole mounting system and the Artic cooler you ordered uses the 2 hole mounting system.

Hmmm...I wonder why people would post that they had mod the cooler to fit their X800? Some comments I've read say people had to cut the pins in order to make it fit. Maybe they weren't screws after all just the pins that hold it in place.

It was very cool of you to offer that to me to Sniping. Ill probably take you up on that offer if This one doesn't work!

Is the cooler I ordered a good one for this card? Because I think I need to cool my card like 20c or more. I got it up to high 80's the other day and I think it must go higher when I play games because it didn't shut down.

The arctic cooler has a passive memory heatplate that mounts through the card and screws into the fan housing on the front of the card... I think there is one less hole in the card that required to get the back plate on. You mave have to cut one of those posts to get the plate through for the fan to attach too. It's a bit hard to explain... you'll see what I'm talking about when you get it.

EDIT:
I took a pic of my x850 with my ati silencer. (1st Pic)

I ciricled the holes red that mount through the card for the memory plate. I think this is where the people with the blue card have the problems with either the holes not existing, or the holes are misaligned.
The points circled in blue is where the heatsink puts pressure on the gpu. This should be the same on all x800 cards no matter what board you have.

EDIT 2:
Another pic, this one is my x800gto (red board)

Circled in blue are again all mounting points for the ATI Silencer. This one is more for visual reference.

Yeah I don't think that my card has that many holes in it. I'll check it out once I get it. Thanks for the visual Rob.

And for Sniper. Will that fan cool off my card? Isn't that the stock cooler for the 800 Pro?

No problem.

I think you can make the silencer fit. I prefer it over the zalman because of the fact it vents that hot air from the case, rather then recirculating it. Helps out other components as well by keeping case temps down.

So with that cooler how fast do you think I can get this card going?

I have plently of air circulation in my case

2 90mm in the side window (intake)
1 90mm in the back under my PSU (vent)
1 90mm under my HD bays in the front (intake)
1 60mm port hole on top (vent)

Yes its the stock cooler for a X800PRO and XT. This cooler should be much better then the one you have and has alot more air flow. This came with my X800GTO but I have another cooler plus the Artic cooler im using right now. The old cooler worked at core of 530 with all 16 pipelines on from 12 pipelines.

Well if the Arctic Cooler doesn't fit or I can't make it fit I'll let yah know man.

Thanks for the generosity!

just wondering

...if you are still having the problem that is....what kind of power supply do you have??

Ok so I got the cooler in today. I took a look at it and there is no way this will fit my card. I'll have to drill holes in the card in order for that big metal plate to screw into.

Can you mount Just the fan using the two screws that line up across eachother from the GPU? Will it stay on and work as effectively?

Probably not as that fan is very heavy...

If it's too much trouble to RMA the fan, keep it and sell it to someone here on the forums for a slightly discounted price, and order the zalman fan.

Well is there a way to mod the Card or the Cooler to fit that card? Like can you drill the holes without damaging the card?

I don't think so... I wouldn't start drilling on a PCB anyways...

So are there no holes at all on the card besides the 2 to hold the heatsink onto the core?

Nope just the two that are around the GPU that is where the fan screws in.

I RMA'd the card with newegg. They didn't even charge me a restock fee. I'm going to order the red X800 GTO instead. That one has the different cooler and I can put the ATI Silencer on it.

Do you still want the cooler I have? If so give me a PM with your address.

I have the Arctic Cooling fan that I bought for the Blue card that wouldn't fit. I'm ordering the red card right now and I looked at it and this one has more holes in it. So I won't need yours after all!

Thanks though!

Yeah wish I woulda known that before I ordered the one that said it fit any X800 series ATI card. Nice huh?
