I'd rather go for the ATI... In the past they've been behind a bit, but the HD5000 series just screams awesomeness :rockout:

That's more expensive than a pre-overclocked HD5850, which is already faster than a GTX470.

Price is far too high for a card with that performance. The only thing going for it over the 5850 is CUDA and Physx... which still doesnt really justify it.

I agree on the 460 being overpriced as it looks more expensive than the HD5850 but I am not so sure about your atatement regarding the 5850 versus the 470, I suoppose it boils down to which side of the fence you are stood, the 470 beats the 5850 (both cards at stock speeds which can only be the accurate comparison) in many things.... not all, but for those that upgrade to a HD5XXX or GTX4XX series card for their DX11 capability, the 470 is actually better "bang for buck" also, take a look here on the specific FPS x BfB issue......

I said the pre-overclocked HD5850 is faster than the GTX470, not the standard clocked ones.

And regarding that "performance per dollar" comparison, it seems to be very distant to all the perf-per-dollar comparisons in other reviews. It could be from the game selection, though.
Some things do look fishy.
I wonder why the FarCry 2 DX9 results are in there. It's clearly a nVidia-centric title and it's counting twice for the average.

Plus, there's the whole "price average" issue.
He says he went to the online stores and did the average price from 12 graphics cards.
Then he says the average price for a HD5850 is $325.

This is extremely unfair, because all the stock-clocked HD5850 are priced at $310 or less.
He clearly added the pre-overclocked (and thus more expensive) HD5850 cards to do the price average, but he used a stock-clock card in the review.

I don't know if all this was on purpose or not, but these methods are clearly pointing to a nVidia-biased review.

I have to add guys that it is sold 300 euros in europe!
Not in US.
Here for example the 5850 sells for 310 euros! (or even more!!!!)
So normally when i say euro, just convert that word in $ if you live in US.

Whether that lot is true or not, what that reveiw does indicate is that in DX11 tests the 470 is quicker than the HD5850 to a degree that makes it financially a more viable alternative, to be fair to the reviewers, there is a fair sleection of games in there. I appreciate you quoted a "pre overclocked" HD5850, all my point is, that is hardly a fair comparison against a stock clocked competitor. When you look at the 2 cards (as I did 3 weeks ago when I bought my 5850), generally, with some exceptions, the 470 more than holds it's own (or seems to from what I have read, by preference I bought the HD 5850 because like you, I saw it as better value especially for me at UK prices, however I acknowledge that in a fair few things, the 470 "may" be a little quicker.

Even the TPU review clearly shows that across all resolutions the 470 tends to be quicker......

That's exactly my point, I don't think it is at all in Europe.
Here, the HD5850 vanilla costs 280-290€, whereas the GTX470 costs 350€ minimum.
It's a 70€ ($90). It's almost twice the price difference there is in the USA.

The GTX 470 is faster than a 5850 overall, especially with AA, in DX11, and when considering minimum frame rates. A pre-overclocked 5850 might be faster in a few benchmarks, but overclock a GTX 470 and they'll be faster.

This GTX 460 does seem overpriced. 250€ seems like a fair price.

+cuda and physics :P
It has caches too!

if nvidia wants to really take it to ati they will price their 460s at $275 so long as they clock near those 5850s which are selling on average for $315

The OC arguement never gets old :shadedshu
A 5850 can often OC further than a 5870 :respect:

Woooooot!? My HD5850, an OC Edition from MSI was 235 EUR. Reference HD5870 were going for 265 EUR at that time. For 310 EUR i could get some pre-overclocked HD5870...
But since then, the prices went up a bit and now HD5850 costs around 260 EUR. Just a reflection of NVIDIA's "no show" status and their crappy existing offerings...

Just took a look at a local shop, HD5850 costs 245€ and a GTX470 is 370€!!!! Thats just insane. Thats 125€ difference! You can buy a 850W High Quality PSU for that.

Oh and btw, a HD5870 is 335€, so even that is cheaper than a GTX470 here in Europe!!!

Yes it is strange, I am less concerned about the pricing difference between the 5870 and 480 which is a fair bit, purely because according to the TPU reviews, at least the 480 across all resolutions is 11% quicker, when you look at the 470 versus the 5850 we see only a 5% performance benefit for the 470 over the 5850 and that just goes to re-enforce for me what great value the HD 5850 really is.

To stay on topic though, if the GTX460 is rumoured to be around 10% slower than the 470, at 300 euro's it's a disaster, the HD5830 would probably come fairly close therefore in performance..... maybe thats why we have a 5830 as many of us never figured why ATi bothered.

Yeah in your area. A 5850 here costs around €250, and that's because they're still not being distributed properly. I've paid about 230 iirc around launch time.

It's called the 465, not 460. It performs worse than a 5830 in crysis and slightly better in than a 5870 in farcry 2. Unless it's $250 it should probably be ignored.

Long long time ago in a galaxy far far away when there was time when new VGA would come up it would be cheaper than current ones and it would cause prices to drop. Not here.

Yes...that place is called probably Ankh-Morpork :-) . For a long time new cards doesn't make old ones prices to drop. They are just more expensive.

Proof is in the pudding:toast: I flashed both my 5850s to a 5870 at stock voltages @ 900/1250 stable

Nice! Fortunatly i got very luck with my card, it will do 930 on stock volts without needing to flash :rockout:
