GTX 470 Owners

It seems MSI put the wrong bios in my card, and possibly others, when it was at the factory. I have a FROZR II bios without the triple voltage control. Meaning it won't work with afterburner 2, but will with 1.61. My question is does anyone think this wrong bios issue might explain my cards poor overclocking performance? Something weird with the voltage control or w/e. On a related note, can anyone with a standard MSI 470 card tell me if they come with the exhaust bracket that has "MSI" cutout on the back? Mine does, but on the promo images I can find only the FROZR card has it.

gtx470s are so much win!!! the fan is not loud at ill. i run it at 50% idle and never creeps higher then 70% and even then its pretty quiet compared to what it was talked about to be from reviews when it was released

all you do is flash it to the Frozr II bios and thatll most likely solve the problems

...try reading my post again, it already has the FROZR II bios

flash a different bios to your card that has the voltage conrol

send an email to MSI and ask for a BIOS that has the triple voltage tweaking enabled

... it has voltage control, just not triple voltage control, specific to FROZR II cards through afterburner 2.0, since my card has a FROZR II bios afterburner 2 has no voltage control for it, because it's not a FROZR II PCB. AB 1.61 doesn't support triple voltage and treats it like a normal card, so it has voltage control. I've already talked to the afterburner dev and he says he's waiting to see what MSI has to say about it, not sure they'll say anything... it'd be a big screw up if they meshed up a batch of cards in such a weird way.

dude EMAIL MSI like go to their site and ask them about your card. I dont think twin frozr gtx470 has triple voltage control now that i think about it.

"That ID is mapped to TF II 470 model with triple voltage support in hardware database. That model has specilly configured voltage control loop so if it is actually a reference card wich lacks triple voltage controlelrs - voltage control will not be available in Afterburner.
Let's wait what MSI say about it, there else is nothing I can add from my side."

The AB dev seems pretty confident it does. I just asked if anyone thought it would overclock better with the bios the PCB was meant to have. If you have no idea then ok.

It's been some 6 months or w/e since I've even logged in @ TPU. Looks like the place is still up and running.

Anyways, I was poking my GTX465 (unlocked to full GTX470) with a screwdriver - lo and behold, the IHS fell off.

Err, okay, it didn't just fall off...

It's the same terrible gray excuse-of-a-TIM on Fermi nV used before on G200 and G80.

^ Hi mate are u using it with IHS or without :)

I was thinking of doing the same with my newly RMAed gtx470(Its Brand NEW)

Ist ok to use it with out IHS :twitch:

Hi mate's

Here's some

Can i just use it with out IHS *direct contact to the HEAT PIPES*

Can it make any diff ?

^Nice. ¦)

Removing the IHS definitely lowers temps; I run 2× 470s in SLI and at this time card #1 has an untampered intact IHS (lazy me) and a newer MCW60 R2 waterblock. Card #2 doesn't have the IHS and it has an old MCW60 with a lower performing cooling pin plate (again, lazy me). Yet, regardless of the somewhat inferior waterblock on card #2 (the one without IHS) it is running ~5ºC cooler than card #1 with the better waterblock.

Card #2 also has custom VRM cooling as one can't mount an MCW60 on an IHS'less core when the stock frontplate is used. Yes, memory chips are not sinked at all. They just barely get warm anyways. ¦P

So, it looks like removing the IHS does help.
Dunno if your card's stock cooler works with IHS'less core, though. You're going to have to try it.

nope there's no contact between the two :(

I wonder if my Icy Vision would fit with the shorter standoffs without the IHS. Too bad I'm not willing to take it off though.

^ ya u could

I will do the same thing once my AC xtreme plus come home :D

Guys, seriously with an 'Arctic' solution on your 470's it will be running so cold it will make you wonder!! Watching HD video, and geforce running at medium speed now (405 Mhz) and temp is 39º C ! :)

U even modded it ,Need to have a look @ ur GTX470 :)

Fellas what do you think the best gtx 470 made is?

If you can get a MSI Gold Edition 465, that's the way to go. They can all unlock.

I just bough myself a Zotac geforce gtx470 for 219euro (brand new from the store) apperantly nvidia has dropped the price significantly recently !

I have some statements to make after been a owner of this card a few days now.

First of all: I have no idea how people manage to get their cards up over 90c.
Mine is running very stable at 80c when gaming the most demanding games ive tried so far (metro2033, BFBC2, etc etc) And i live in a hot country !

2nd of all: The fan... people say its a jetplane, i Strongly disagree. Sometimes i whonder if the computer is actually on, or off , no matter if im gaming or in windows.
I had a gts250 before and that was waaaay louder then this card, in both windows and gaming.

My case is very small, its very tight in there, so theoretically the components should get very hot, all fans i have is 2x 120mm and 2x 80mm at the back, thats all.

3rd of all: Thanks to myself for listening to myself , so i bough this card instead of a ATI card (ive had problems with ati drivers and compatiblity and stability the last 10years).
Thanks Nvidia for making such a insane graphic card , for such a low price ! :respect:

ZOTAX GTX FTW! LOL Cheers! I couldn't have said it better hehehehehe, and a damn good price you basta ;)

messing with this 1.2volt chugging galaxy gtx 470

yes, there good cards.

GTX 465's that can unlock. Waayyy cheaper!
+1 I have the samething a PNY version black PCB $199.99 @ the egg.
