Under UEFI, it will be much easier for that input to come a soft keyboard, gestures on a touchscreen or any future input device.

"The extensible part of the name is important because we are going to have to live with this for a long time," said Mr Doran.

"At the moment it can be 25-30 seconds of boot time before you see the first bit of OS sign-on," he said. "With UEFI we're getting it under a handful of seconds."

Bios' replacement, known as UEFI, will predominate in new PCs by 2011.

I'm all for advancements in technology, as long as it looks and works like BIOS does, I'll be happy with it. I would hate to see EFI come in and not support overclocking options.

This would be nice, especially if there were a way to replace existing bios on newer (existing)mobos (example X58). I wonder if that would even be possible...?

Probably not since this is going to be a different chip.

This should only really effect the back-end. The menus and options you see in the BIOS menu now should be largely unchanged or expanded. From what I read it simply opens the standards up to allow the computer to be more general about how things connect to the computer. I would guess the time savings comes from cutting out now unneeded checks to ports that aren't being used and verifications checks that the devices are hooked up in a particular way. With this UEFI system it seems to just scan once, see X devices, ID's them, and connects to system as input this or output that.

Does this mean that it would be more accurate to refer to UEFI as simply the next generation of BIOS?
