Cayman's are out with AIB's

CD at S/A in a non NV post..

"Yes, you heard it right, some AIBs have Cayman chips now, and if everything else holds true to form, they should be on the store shelves across the world in 2-4 weeks. The kits come with a Cayman and some 6Ghz GDDR5, so the memory clocks will end up between 5.5-6GHz.

There are a lot of really bad rumors going around the net right now so be careful what you believe. The two things that we know are true is the memory speed and that barring a last second glitch, you will be buying them before Dec 1. Everything else should be taken with a glacier sized grain of salt."

CD is usually quite accurate with AMD stuff. Maybe it's not going to be so bad?

http://www.semiaccurate.com/2010/11/01/cayman-chips-turn-wild/

And let's hope we don't get the usual anti S/A retorts. After all it's NOT an NV related post.

My own wisdom here is: A forest of knowledge grows from many seeds.

If you knew the numebrs of gpus shipped ,that might actually hold some importance, but otherwise, this is non-news.

No, just being honest. I don't care if gpus ship to OEMs, I care when they hit the shelves, and we can go buy them.

I care about the number of cards on the shelf.

That info could be a small number...1000 cards per OEM, and that's it.

Memory is actually 7ghz bin, but yeilds on that bin specifically aren't that good, so we get lowered memory speeds?

And no offense dude, but if you cannot accept people giving feedback, stop posting. I don't like the info like you do, so really, you ahve to accept that. I didn't make any personal remarks to you...simply in relation to the news, so you have no choice but to deal with it. Sorry for being honest, but this is the truth.

Why create the thread if you assume its just going to get flamed? Thats sort of the definition of a troll.

You could call me an "industry analyst". Like when I knew stuff was going on @ HP before it was public, etc...I know when memory manufacturers started producing memory, what bins they have, and availability of those bins. THAT is publically available info(DRAMEXchange). I subscribe to industry websites with "insider" info(pay-to-view websites). Add in a bit of common sense, and you've got the source of alot of my comments.

So again, apologies to Dave. Especially cos he's in Canada and i dont like offending Canadians.

NO, but he's right. Because of the large die size, it will be a very hot chip, similar to fermi. and so much more so, because AMD's gpu transistor density is higher than nV's.

But for a high-end SKU, that doesn't matter. Probably half of the people that buy high-end SKUs end up with aftermarket cooling. This will be a big, hot, power-hungry card.

The problem with these chips has nothing to do with design..TSMC's process is the problem, so while AMD may have a functional chip...it will be underperforming considering the design's potential, due to TSMC. These chips suck...but so does nV's chips. I will not buy any more 40nm gpu products, myself, unless Cayman dual gpu card can push 3 monitors with the performance I require, and that has nothing to due to AMD/nV.

Nothing is gonna change that, unfortunately. I mean..maybe these chips are made @ GF, but I doubt it.

OMG.

I lolled because of my second post:

"I'm awaiting an onlsaught of "so whats" and "meh's""

I figure Athlon put the 'Meh' in specifically because of that, for humour (even though the other part of his text is serious - about it being disappointing).

My 'lol' was a genuine, 'ho ho' that was funny, not 'lol' as in 'yeah right'.

If you find some of my recent posts you'll see i mention 6970 as being potentially a noisy hot beast. I'm hoping what CD knows says different.

Well, the thing is, I could come up with the same info CD does. He doesn't really have any insider info...

the difference between me and him is that I'm not trying to turn what I know into money. I just offer it freely...because who knows, I could be totally off-base.

But with that said, he doesn't deserve any hype. Go back through the last 10 years of my postings, you'll find I'm more accurate than he is. I just have an attitude that's harder to swallow than his is.

And I'm not trying to toot my own horn here, but really? gpus are shipping to OEMs? How is this news? Lead-time says any November launch is going to be low-quantity. Fortunately for AMD, most people will be spending money on real christmas gifts, not gpus, so this shouldn't be an issue, but I sitll think they should be waiting until the new year for a real launch.

I disagree. There are plenty of people waiting for the holidays to purchase the 69xx cards. AMD will want these cards to sell like hotcakes, thus launching them before the new year. I don't care if they delayed the launch until then, but people will rage if there is a delay on a card promised to launch in late November/early December. A society built toward instant gratification will do that to business.

Anyways the next upgrade i go for (Green or Red) should be atleast a 20% more powerful than my 4GB 5970. :D

those toxic 5970's are an amazing card, I'd keep those through this upcoming generation. as oppose to normal 5970's which are roughly 5850CFX performance, your above 5870 CFX performance with the out of the box OC, more ram, not to mention it's fantastic cooler.

that card is a beast, if a new gen single GPU can match or beat it on average, I will attempt to eat my own head.

Yeah, I hear ya on that one.

To me, gpus are but one part of a videocard. There's the pcb, the VRMs and other surface-mount parts, the display output, and the memory.

Alot of my thoughts on Cayman are a direct response to the memory. I'm not sure if I posted in this thread or was talking on teamspeak, but I expect 2GB/gpu with Cayman, and for the same basic reasons that the Eyefinity6 cards have 2GB.

Plain and simple, 1GB isn't enough for Eyefinity resolutions. There's not much more than 1GB needed, but unless AMD increases the ram bus, the only way for them to increase buffer size is to double up on the memory.

That memory, at the speed needed, just went into production at the end of September, and I do not have real info on yeilds, but I haven't heard good things, either.

AMD almost always under-specs the speed of thier gpu ram, but at the same time, they often also tighten up latencies as well.

Anyway, 2GB of ram adds cost. That added cost HAS to translate into some sort of performance increase, and they can only do that in so many ways, due to process/cooling limits. As far as I am concerned, everyone should know what Cayman is by now.

NO, but he's right. Because of the large die size, it will be a very hot chip, similar to fermi.

Intel Core i7 isn't disappointing despite having one of the largest CPU dies ever made, and hot. As long as it lives up to performance:Watt for its category (something Core i7 does, while GTX 480 doesn't (HD 5970 having better thermals, better power consumption and better performance)), people won't give a rat's arse.

Wonky logic.

GF100 was late due to production issues - not because it was too slow. It was scheduled for 2009 release but design and manufacturing communication errors meant it slipped.

If GF100 had been without those manufacturing issues it would frankly have destroyed the 5870 (it would have had 512 operational cores).

If GTX 580 does give 10-20% over GTX 480 and consumes less power - resulting in better cooling and lower noise - I'll probably wait for one. I fear the 6970 might be noisy and not as powerful as the 580.

It's not wonky at all, I know why it was late to production, but because it was, it had to be faster when it came out. To be late to production then to be slower, would have been a bad deal.

Usually if it comes out last, it's going to be faster, or as fast, or very price competitive and mid-ranged.
