Hello, My son needs a new desktop, want to give him my current system and build an AMD system if I can find a setup that will OUT PERFORM the system in specs.Only need MB CPU RAM all else I have, if no combination will out perform current then will build AMD for gaming rig. All suggestions welcome. Need system before Bulldozer comes out may upgrade later if needed. Budget is ~$500 for mb cpu ram. Is this possible?

i5 2500K based group will set you back by a bit less than $500 and will outperform the i7 920 in most tasks.

Most tasks, Gaming? I was thinking AMD would be better due to future upgrade-ability. To bulldozer? Also best bang for buck? Is there no current AMD combo that is faster than the i7 920?

Current combo, no not really. You could go with an 1100T setup, and the extra 2 cores might help out in the rare instance you are running a program that really uses 6 cores(encoding for example), but really overall the 1100T is still slightly behind the 920 in performance.

I'd go with the cheaper 955BE and just push the multiplier up.
