Hi everybody. I would like to know if anybody here has the non extreme edition i7 980 cpu and had any joy overclocking it? Thanks.:respect:

I've got the i7 970, which is the same cpu, except for the max multiplier (24 instead of 25 in yours).

I got it to be perfectly stable at 228 bclk, which i think is pretty good, and that fact gave me lots of option for ram speed and settings. I settled on two different settings: 210*21 for 4410 mhz@1.424 vcore and 222*19 for 4200@1.360 vcore. I think i could bench at 4500 ish, but i really hit the limits of my watercooling set-up. The first setting is for winter and the second for summer. Both run with lower temps than my previous 950, so the 32nm process REALLY makes a difference!

In conclusion, find the max vcore you (and your cooling option) are comfortable with and the max bclk it can give you. Then try different multiplier to find the max frequency. Mine only accept to work with odd multipliers, but maybe yours will cooperate a little more! Good luck ocing that beast!

You probally mean the 970

Ok. So i bought an i7 970 from a local pc shop and overclocked the shit out of it and it was crap!! Not even stable at 4.00ghz @ 1.4 volts. LOL took it back and got a refund and got every penny back. Now i was looking on ebay 4 an i7 980(hense this thread) and found 1 for $470 delivered. Did i say i paid $500 for the 970? So what is it capable of, well im currently at 4.6ghz @ 1.425 volts and 1.3 qpi volts stable. I know sum people have had success with the 970 but i didnt so i would recommend a 980 to anybody if they wanted one. At the same time i cant say this for all i7 980 cpus. Idle temps are: 39,35,33,31,37,45 @ 2.4ghz/1.425v Load temps are 70,65,64,61,70,73 @ 4.6ghz/1.425v.;)

Overclocking a non X Core i7 Gulftown depends on how much you've been lucky with the IMC as with bclk overclocking you pretty much overclock everything.
You probably want to adjust the voltage on CPU VTT to reach higher bclk( and higher QPI )
Mine overclocks to max 223 bclk, probably a tad more considering I didn't play with VTT as I had unlocked multi.
Anyway if you are lucky you can reach even 4,6 ghz on custom loop without the need of unlocked multi ;)
Wasn't a better jump to buy an x79 system? Just asking

Maybe but i love my x58 system plus id have to spend sumthin like $1000+.

I see :) you'll surely enjoy it if you do heavy workloads, I squeezed mine for 2 years! (I literally did it) on certain weeks I have a render duty for it that goes for 5-6+ hours per day and it still serves me well... 4,6 ghz rock solid with 1.42vcore

Have fun with it ;)

Thanks man. Im currrently at 4.7 @ 1.52 volts and the temps are starting to get extreme under load plus its summer here now and the temp in my room is about 30 degrees(i need an aircon!!) so its not helping. But hey thats why we are here isnt it. Whats the max youve stressed your cpu mate out of curiosity?

I didn't feel safe going over 1.55 volts because I only have one triple rad attached to it and the heat dissipation was becoming a serious problem, 1.5v brought me on the 90c range!
I couldn't go over 4,7 ghz without disabling HyperThreading so I just called it a day and left it at 4,5 ghz with 1,42v that believe me, the performance gain is something undescribable!
What I've noticed, atleast on my chip, is that to go over 4,6 ghz you need to increase the vcore by 0.5-0.7 to get it stable

Ok. I just had 4.7ghz @ 1.525v and the max core was 98 and i had all the fans down low and it passed 20 passses at linX with hyper threading on with a 240 rad. When i turned up the fans on the rad the hottest core was 93. Im gona do sum more benching tonight when it gets cooler. BTW that linX stresses the cpu big time!! A prime95 would only make the hottest core go to 80-85.;)

Yeah if you want to be absolutely sure about stability linX is the best I am glad you are having fun with your chip! Gulftown is AWESOME :toast: and your chip is very good!

I guess you'll be keeping it at 4,5-4,6 ghz for 24/7 right? You've reached 4,7 ghz with a good vcore so you shouldn't need much voltage to keep it at 4,5-4,6 ghz

Yer 4.6ghz on a six core with 12 threads sound nice doesnt it. I wish it was winter here. I would try for 5ghz with a mad vcore!! Ive got it at a measly 4ghz @ 1.225v atm just to keep it cool. Thanks 4 your input bud!:toast:

I'm glad to talk about Westmere-Gulftowns I think they are some of the best CPUs out there, I still remember the launch day benchmarks :rockout:

If you want to see 5ghz just disable HT, I know it isn't the same as having 5ghz 6c/12t but you'd need sooooo much voltage!

May I ask you which waterblock are you using on your CPU? I've read around here that you've been watercooling a long time before I started, I'm fresh in the business and you have a lot of experience so you know better about which is good and no-no.

Thanks! :toast:

Im using the EK-Supreme HF EN Nickel. I basically bought this block because it has an acrylic top so it can go with my acrylic case. Its not bad, probably one of the best ive purchased. I also run two bitspower Black Freezer VG-A6970 gpu acrylic blocks on my 6950/70s. Ive been water cooling for so long i wanted something to look really good even over performance but as its turns out the loops been pretty kick ass.:)

Oh then I did well to purchase EK too :rockout:
I'm using the loop to watercool only the CPU, I've always been scared to void the warranty on the GPUs and lazy too to be honest.
You're running with bitspower fittings I guess

Yer most of em. How long u been water cooling for? Can u show me a picture of your beast? Id love to see it!:)

Not much not much, just a year but I just stuffed the radiator outside with the mounting bracket and plugged it to the CPU block and bay/radiator it's the XSPC with the pump inside.
In fact for my next build I'll be using an H100 because I really hate giving it maintenance.
When my 3930K arrives I'll post some screens of the setup, I have the Rampage 4 and the Dominator GT ram right here, all I need is the CPU!

Nice. How do those H100 work? Do u never need to refill them?

It's very very simple, just mount the radiator somewhere on the side/top panel of the case (best on the top because it's 2x120) and you're done :D
Can't say about temperatures because I still have to plug it, I didn't bother changing the heatsink I already have for just one week and I can't stay without the rig for some time because I have a big project going on.

Custom loop is better for expansion possibility as you already know.
I think the H100 is pretty good for lazyness :D
