as per the Title, my gtx 580 Zotac AMP is fragmenting. I have given up on SLI/Crossfire based configurations, so please don't suggest twin GTX460s. I have a spare GTX 460 768 which does enough, but I prefer to keep it in my HTPC. The question is, I have a warranty with microcenter on the GTX 580(I am that impatient).

TLDR: Replace the GTX 580? or wait for AMD's next gen to hit Microcenter shelves(when?)?

I can survive on a GTX 460 for a very long time. I actually played on one(my wifes comp) over our vacation at our hotel room(skyrim lawl). And I can deal with it for now. I was just hopeing to go to a next gen card, and I don't mind AMD one bit. I was just wondering if anyone knew when they would be releasing there 7970 line? My warranty with Microcenter is about 6 months into a 2 year warranty.

So, doe sthat warranty provide the opportunity to get a different card? If so, then I'd wait a bit.

If not, just get it replaced. GTX580 is one powerful card. No need to try anything different.

Just get the GTX580 replaced. We are just starting to see the 7000 series news leak to the market, so I wouldn't expect it to be out any time soon, at least not anywhere near as soon as just sending the card in for warranty service.

I noticed, there no longer carrying the type of GTX 580 card I bought. Atleast according to the online inventory for the particular store I went to. So I am thinking I'd have the right to ask for in-store credit, as the exact same item isn't available.

Ah, it all makes sense now. I'll suggest that you jsut get another GTX580 then. Mayne users swapping form nV cards to AMD need to re-install OS. NOt all, but it is fairly common. So save yourself the hassle.

In my 4 years as a PC Tech, this is true of the Chipsets, but have not encountered such on the video cards. Just to be safe though, uninstall the nvidia drivers before you shut it down to install the AMD card ;)
