Intel Sandy Bridge-E may be a duo this time, having only two processors (the Core i7-3960X and i7-3930K hexa-cores) to choose from, but early next year it will turn into a trio through the release of the Core i7-3820. This new model is the cheapest in the Sandy Bridge-E family and has begun to become available for pre-order around the world.

Built using 32nm process technology, the i7-3820 features four cores clocked at 3.6 GHz (3.9 GHz Turbo), eight threads, 10 MB of L3 cache, a quad-channel memory controller, and a TDP of 130W. The Core i7-3820 can be found listed in the US at $311.54 and in Europe at 276 Euro.

Even $320 is a sweet price.

Is it unlocked? Does it need to be unlocked? Haven't been keeping up that well with skt2011, but at half the price of the previous cheapest entry, that GA-X79-UD7 is getting tastier.

This one isn't a 'K' chip so overclocking will be limited. Its multiplier is said to go up to 43x.

You should be able to reach 5ghz with this chip on BCLK overclocking, you just have to fiddle more with settings, that in my book, it's funnier :)

$320 is pushing it even for Intel with their insane prices and it is not even IB.

Work out the total new pc build minm. cost for this i7-3820 then compare it to others and $320 just does not cut it. $265 sure if Intel is serious about getting people to buy it.
If only a cpu swap into a current mboard sure $320 is not bad, this you need $120~$200 mboard + this cpu = $550, add shipping and tax ???? . :nutkick:

Keep in mind $265 cpu + local tax + fed tax + shipping and ??? $290~$320 delivered to your door for this little improvement over a i7-2700k / i7-2550k presuming it works and is not a dud for RMA.

Except that 2700K is selling for MORE money than $320 locally. 2600K is $329, 2700K is $379!!!

Lots of cheaper 2011 boards out now, too. The 3820, if they clock well, may very well offer more than 1155, for less $$$.

Also count in the platform upgradeability, you can go over 4 cores without a motherboard change :rockout:

LOL, nice one, very funny,......

But seriously, I think WarraWarra is forgetting that the LGA2011 platform is the successor of the LGA1366 platform, which is circa 2008 tech. Its also important to point out that the circa 2008 Bloomfield line launched with virtually the “exact” same triple CPU introduction with the virtually the “exact” same pricing scheme. The Core i7 3930K, Core i7 3960X and X79 chipset seemed rushed to market despite its shortcomings or the Core i7 3820 seems delayed but beyond that it is very similar to launches we have seen in the past for this segment of the market.

It’s a little late to complain about prices now,….3 to 4 years to late. Actually given the time span and the lack of noteworthy competition form AMD we should count ourselves lucky that prices have basically remained unchanged.

Heck even Ivy Bridge seems to be priced very much like Sandy Bridge,......

Would like to see multi-gpu scaling tests with this one. If it offers measurable flagship scaling gains over regular SB, I'd grab one.

You'd gain the extended amount of RAM slots available with a 8 DIMM motherboard to set up a RAMDISK, it's very nice for gaming, copy a game inside the RAMDISK and enjoy nonexistent loading times :D

Are you kidding? $550 is not that bad, I just paid $500 for my 2500k + mobo.

For the same price as 2600k you get 10mb L3 cache, quad-channel memory, better mobo support...

This. If I were building my rig today, this is what I'd get. DAAAAYUM! should've waited a few months! Oh well. I'm stuck with 4 DIMM slots now for limited RAMdisk capabilities.
