Tom's Hardware GTX680 Review!!

I agree C-Daddy, but remember that the retailers order a set number of card for launch based on their projection of sales. If they sell out immediately (even though more are availble) the price will still remain high until the damand against their stock levels subsides.

I'm an ATI/AMD user, but this card looks worthy. I won't buy one as I have no money (and still haven't put in my 2nd 6970 lol), but in the top tier of GCs ... unless one company or the other can consistently hold the crown, generation after generation, I don't see it as being a AMD killer or anything like that.

Just my 2 cents. :toast:

Over at OCUK this was posted:

"All I can say it looks good, its quieter than 7970 which was quiet, it clocks to similar levels and it cost less.

Asus, OcUK, MSI, EVGA and Gigabyte are in stock and ready for launch."

Maybe it's true the MSRP or whatever it's called will be lower than that of the 7970 and then we'll certainly see shortage.

But anyway, I'm also not interested. When I got my GTX570 it cost almost the same amount as the card I had before, an EVGA GTX275 FTW offering almost double the performance. Those days are gone.

As for this particular card, it is a truly exceptional... GTX660Ti. The company, NVidia has done a great job, they managed to bring out a better card than the best AMD after only 2 months and a half on a new arch. But it's only 35% better than the GTX580 (maybe more maybe less). That's the real catch and it says everything about the state of the GPU's for gaming. (I'm pretty sure that we will not see any GK110 until maybe in September... if it's needed)

Great news! Maybe AMD will now lower the price of the HD 7870, which is the card I actually want :D

Problem with that; the 7870 apparently beats the GTX680 in GPGPU.

I doubt superior GPGPU performance will be a reason to keep the price of the HD 7870 so high. I mean, it's not a big selling point, right? I want the card for gaming, like 90% of the people who buy them.

I hope not, but we never know :/

...

I think it's impossible to sale GTX 680 for $499, if those benchmark was true... GTX 580 already price cut, now if GTX 680 $499, wow I wonder how much the price for the GTX 580...

and those benchmark only summarized from six games??? wait for W1zz bench :)

ahh yeah I found this SS, I don't know what kind of bench is this
nv680compute.JPG

maybe fake

Those benches rely on software... chances are that sisoftware sandra or whatever bench doesnt even have drivers or support to use the card, and the 680 gets beat...

its like running 3Dmark 11 using the Standard VGA Driver of windows instead of the real thing. Completely meaningless, and 100% guaranteed to happen to a handful of benching softwares when people bench something that hasn't been released yet.

Notice how the 580 doenst seem to be in that GPGPU comparison, becuase it would be whooping the 680 too lol..

Well thats funny. With that little graph on GPGPU stuff says the GTX680 only has 8SPs. Either that 680 wasn't working right or that program doesnt support the 680 yet.

I guess it's good the reviews are starting to come out publicly, but I'll wait for Wizz to review it, I stopped trusting toms hardware a long long time ago.

Like I have been screaming for sometime.... The clocks are 706/1411/1502 not 1006MHz and 1058MHz with power boost. This review was done at an overclocked clock speed. @ 1058Mhz I can make my HD7970 look this nice too :) Crap even with out it.

I can offer other reviews verifying this as well. I have seen these cards personally.... while the GTX 680 can beat the HD 7970 in some real life areas.... the real life performance is not that great as most people think. Also I will say the HD 7970 also fires back and can beat the GTX 680 by fairly high numbers too. I mentioned this fact like two weeks ago and got a lot of flak for it. But it is just true.... the claims that this card is 50% faster or 40% faster is just false.
Whether or not Nvidia has the GK110 coming out later or not (Mainly because they couldn't get it to work fully just yet).... their top card for right now is the GTX 680 and it is not as hardcore as some people want to believe.
While I own two HD7970's I must say I am disappointed at both companies for not delivering what they originally promised in terms of performance for this generation. Hopefully this will change when the HD 7980/8970 and GTX 685/780 release.

according to that link you just posted

Core clock is maintained at 1006MHz (Stock) which Speed boost upto 1058MHz and Memory is clocked at 1.5GHz (6GHz Effective).

From what I had read any reports of a 706 clock speed is from a driver bug. Why would Tom's review the card with a large overclock?

As pointed out the article you posted clearly quotes the default GPU clock at 1006, it even mentions reports of very high OCing for this GPU, and I quote:

Inital reports suggest that the card can be overclocked till 1.2GHz all the way uptill 1.4GHz on the Core.

Are you sure you posted the link to the right article?

Anyways, why are people running around saying this and that about a card that has not even been relased? Can't you guys just be patient and wait for W1zzard's review before jumping to conclusions? What is it about this particular card that has caught most of the forum in a brouhaha? :wtf:

It shouldn't be that hard to wait just one more day...

Actually I stand corrected.... I am one who will retract my statement if I was wrong. According to the Engineer I work with who is testing these cards.... the idle clock is 706Mhz Not the normal core clock. There is also a 3rd clock setting which is the "Turbo Boost" This is why the confusion. Even still.... while qualifying these cards..... his claims are that these cards are more the equivalent of the HD 7970 not the superior. With the tests I have witnessed first hand... I would agree. I have no proof this time except my word.... But my orignal comment still stands.... I am still not that impressed with both camps cards this generation.... even though !!!sigh!!!! I will be buying a couple of these too!

damn teaser... BUY NOW link is dead.

He's usually full of shit but if that's correct, expect the 7970 to drop too. I enquired with a retailer recently about prices of a 7970 card and was advised by their sales guy to hold off. He said the price [of the 7970] definitely wouldn't be going up.
Umm, no he is not. ;)

*waits for everybody to sell their 580's for dirt cheap.
