R9 290-290X owners thread

Using the 9.5 Beta, seems like the black screens are gone for good.

Nice one, AMD!

That's awesome, glad to hear. :)

I'm considering fllashing to the 290x bios just to try it out. It'll be a while, probably a week before I have the chance to do it, but it would be worth trying.

how many ppl are using the uber bios over the quiet and if so..any noticeable for uber?

Wow. I replaced the stock cooler on my R9 290 with a NZXT Kraken X60 and my temps dropped 55°C! Instead of it hovering at the target temp of 95°C, I'm barely hitting 40°C. On top of that my core frequency doesn't throttle anymore and the AIO is quieter, overall.

Now time for some overclocking. :rockout:

better check the vrm temps...

They're around 75°C. I have a fan blowing over them.

Not bad. 75*c under medium or heavy (long) 100% GPU Load?
And anyone can share with CryEngine 3 SDK (VHQ) fps? I know that CE loves amd CPU's (full 8 core support) and GPU's.

How's the 290 on the WCG area? Good cruncher?

Thinking about getting into that.

My XFX 290X just hit my bank account. Count me in.

Count me in also

It would probably be great, but currently there aren't many supported projects (I don't think any) for TPU's WCG team: it's is all cpu right now, but the F@H team uses gpus for their work, though I'm less familiar with it.

I'd be interested in find out more info as well :)

But we definitely welcome you to the WCG team with your cpu power. Stop by any time in our main team thread to get help setting it all up :respect: :D

Then it's time to get a optimized OC for this Haswell (with a POS IHS, tho)....

I'll be glad to join the team.

Now... i'm missing photos in this thread. I'll take some and post here later.

Can't wait to see you join up! :) :toast:

An optimized OC on Haswell is proving more difficult than my last CPU, but I think I'm making progress  Time to delid this bad boy, going to hopefully by this weekend, already ordered some coollaboraty liquid pro for it.

And as far as pictures go, I was about to take some last night while playing with my pc, but I think I will tonight and post them later on.

what are the chances of hitting 4.5ghz on random haswells?

im thinking about upgrading, but dont want to take a hit on clock speed.

I don't have any solid numbers, but my 4770k is just an average CPU that has taken a while to get stable at 4.4, haven't pushed for 4.5. At 4.4, it crunches 24/7 at 74*C max temp, and on a stress test like prime or ibt, temps go through the roof to like 90*C+, all on full custom water. :( Member james said he couldn't boot at 4.5 and couldn't get 4.4 stable, and I believe that.

Same loop keeps my 290 super cool (relatively), like 40-42*C max, depending, usually around 36-38

ouch, my 2500k never hits 60 at 4.5 on a khuler 620..

i guess ill pass even though haswell is 10 watts less on the TDP.

i was hoping to compensate for my new 290 pro by saving some watts on the cpu...

Yes, the temps are high, much higher than I expected. Last night, I removed the block, cleaned/reapplied the paste, remounted the block to make sure it wasn't an issue, and temps are the same. I'm definitely going to be delidding my cpu, and soon.

But on the other hand, my 290 has been super solid, running a modest OC of 1050/1350 nice and comfy.

what is the consensus on the 290/290x is a thermal TIM re-apply something i should do the second its out of the box? or is it really just a inherently hot chip? I know of the heat bleed and nothing can really be done about TDP but is it like the nvidia 2xx series where the TIM was a wreck?

Recently ordered an XFX R9-290 after lining up a buyer for my 7970 Dual-X. Will be running the reference cooler for a while, spent a lot of money on PC stuff this year and still have some Christmas shopping to take care of. As soon as I take care of everything else, I am going to order an XSPC razor block and backplate.
Might take a chance on day one and see if it unlocks to a 290X.

I am getting excellent performance from my 7970, but this will give me the excuse to get a nice looking full cover waterblock.

I can't say for sure, but the last few AMD cards I've had have had pretty lousy TIM-jobs. I haven't tested it specifically, so I can't say if changing it would make a whole lot of difference, but perhaps someone else has and can be of better use here.

On another note, I played a little FC3 coop online this afternoon, and I was getting some funky stuff going on. It seems to throttle down to the 800mhz range, yielding in a very big drop in fps, and then it goes back to normal gpu clock of 1050 (slight OC), resulting in a very good fps. Not sure what's happening, but I will be trying no OC and then the new b9.5 release, which I haven't tried yet.

Anyone else seen anything similar in FC3? It seems to be isolated to FC3 as far as I have noticed.

Nevermind, in game vsync settings were giving me problems, oops. Apparently it kept cutting me down to 30fps, thus the throttling. Disabled it and everything was nice and smooth :)

The black screens are back, and they're worse. Flickering and stuttering coming along.

C'mon AMD, get your s**t together. Maybe a WHQL'd driver will fix it? It's getting annoying as hell.

To make matters worst, Intel POS HD control panel isn't running as it should.

This is going to be a really long night...

Wow... 67*c under LC? Quite hot :o
But score is epic ;)
I'm sure you can push even 1250/1300MHz on Core with LC. But higher OC would need ("a bit") more mV.

Its actually on Air. Haven't put it under water yet

67*c vrm on ref. cooler? No way, I can't believe it ;o
