Morning guys. So few days ago I ordered bunch New parts
Cpu i7 4790k DC.
Gpu Evga gtx960 4 gig
Mb asus z97 pro gamer
Ram corsair 2x8 gig @2400 mghrtz
So I just watched video on i7 cpu they are saying that I can't use my ram. Intel runs on 1633 I think they said 1333.
Do I have to return my ram or can I use it?

The video is misleading, i have an old I5 2550k and its memory controller supports a max of 1333mhz but i run my ram at its rated speed of 2133mhz without issues.

Basically anything over what the CPU supports is classed as an overclock.

At the end of the day if none of these CPU's can run ram over 1333/1600/1866+ mhz then it would be pointless selling ram at faster speeds as no one would buy them.

You can use it. Just set the XMP profile. But ram can be hit or miss on some boards but I'm sure your fine.

But why aren't you showing the full specs? Link to all your parts? Or at least model #

This "Ram corsair 2x8 gig @2400 mghrtz" tells us very little about what you bought. DDR3? DDR4? Model numbers please

you're watching a vid from ages back when imc topped out at 2133 and you got little performance gains from faster ram....

what the case was, is not always.

I'm sorry about not having enough info. What else do you want see?. Rest parts are from current pc.
Antec 1000w psu. Antec twelve hundredv3 case.
Running 3 24 inch monitors.
I will post part numbers in few hrs. In doing post from cell phone not home.

The mb has given info about ram it shows O.C. next to all ram above 1600/1333 . so do I have to oc Ram I bought or just plug n play. I know you said just change setting in bios xmp profile.
Also this pc is for iracing only and this sim /game does not take likely to oc. Most players actually see a loss in fps w oc ram and cpu

Ram is DD3.

LOL..."ages back?" We're only talking about the last 4 years prior to Skylake.

And yes, the same would generally hold true for Devil's Canyon.

Ya bud was I think 2 years old. I'm just watching video on utube how setup my bios if needed. I'm just trying build a stable system that I race for 4 to 6 he's w out hear issues. I also bought cooler master don't have part number at moment geminII 44.

Without some tweaking, the RAM won't run at 2400MHz. Heck, even with tweaking you'll be lucky to get it to run at 2400MHz. But it should default to a lower clock profile and run just fine there. I'd just set it to 1866 and leave it there. Heck, it probably has an XMP profile for 1866.

Running a 4790K with 2400Mhz RAM no issues at all. As mentioned you just need to use the XMP profile if it's available.

in that time there has been 4 generations of cpu from intel. ivy, haswel, broadwell and now skylake too.

it is ages :D

haswell, and ivy bridge to lesser degree both, saw imc improvements which helped the cpu make use of the extra bandwith faster ram brings.

enough benchmark threads on these forums to show that fact, but how much impact that has on things not using that bandwidth is another matter.

OP is upgrading his rig....
Old rig:
System Name: Evga
Processor: Q9650
Motherboard: 779 ultra sli
Cooling: Air 2 10 inch 4 6 inch 2 5 inch fans
Memory: 16 gig fatality 2400 hrtz
Video Card(s): Evga gtx680 2 gig
Hard Disk(s): Ssd 120 gig. And 50 gig for os
LCD/CRT Model: Tripple 24inch samsung led
Case: Evga ??
Sound Card: Nvidia
Power Supply: Antec 1000w
Mouse: Microsoft
Keyboard: Kuyimu gamers
Software: Win7 pro 64 bit

new parts:
Cpu i7 4790k DC.
Gpu Evga gtx960 4 gig
Mb asus z97 pro gamer
Ram corsair 2x8 gig @2400 mghrtz

just replace what you need from old rig and make the proper tests to see everything is "OK" if dont know about to normal tests.... just be sure that all drivers and controllers are correctly installed, instal HWinfo and run sensors only, then open your favorite game and play for at least one hour, then look back to HWinfo readings, everything should be okay, put special care to temps on CPU and Video card,

dont worry about your memory, it will work lad, since is DDR3 and your board supports it,

Regards,

You do realise the 960 is a slight downgrade in performance from the 680?

Or you can think of it as 680<770 which is only slightly >960. :D

also stock 680 >770
overclocked 680 <770 < 960 ..
960 just sucks....

It's actually a very capable card as long as you're not comparing to AMD cards.

I think you got your arrows wrong, btw.

im pretty bad to arrows i have to confess....
but you are correct... 680 is a pretty strong video card, i own one :D

I think the 960 4 gig is pretty good for 215 USD. Can't find a better more reliable Gpu for 200 usd

I once debated between 950 and 960. Those two seemed very much identical in terms of frame rates.

In the end, chose to stick with my existing GPU which is 760. Never in my life, have I purchased x70 GPU or higher end ATI(AMD) GPU. With 970 mini itx out there, I guess it is an option but I don't have the need for anything better than 950 at the moment.

The 960 is 4 gig my680 is2gig how is this downgrading

I could not find a better or higher perfoming gpu from Evga for around 200USD. It has to be Evga. IRacing runs the smoothes w Evga gpu. I have asked bunch racers in iracing forum all said stick w Evga.

So should I run the 680 I have and return the 960 if u guys are saying it will not perform any better?

you dont need it ... 680 was fine ... you could save the money,

The 960 is 4 gig my680 is2gig how is this downgrading
all in video cards is not about memory size, GPU, bandwith... memory and several things, is better to ask if you are not expert or enthusiast...

the better option if available,

also use multiquote, avoid reposts...
