R9 290 black screen on Windows startup

Hi guys, another update that makes me more confused.
Tried a R9 270X --> Same exact problem as my 290, but the 4850 keeps on going as it was nothing.

Could it be the motherboard?

To me it honestly sounds like either your motherboard is broken or the PSU is not delivering enough power, which would mean it's gone bad. The only way to really tell is to swap out to a different PSU.

Hi guys, I've got a 290 from MSI that, after installing a Prolimatech MK-26, has always worked really well, with temps really low on GPU and under 100°C for VRMs. Now, I went on holiday leaving my PC in perfect working order and, when I got back, I tried to boot the PC and got a black screen right after the initial Windows loading screen (right before that screen where you insert your password) (I'm running windows 8.1). Tried to reboot but nothing, always the same; at times, my PC wouldn't even BIOS post.
Not really knowing what was happening, I tried to do a system recovery without getting anywhere; at that point, I put my old HD4850 and the system booted correctly. Thinking about drivers problem, I did a complete clean up of the existing video driver with Display Driver Uninstall (the good old Drivesweeper) and tried again with the 290. Weird enough, all seemed fine with the exception that the resolution was FullHD, without drivers!

Anyway, I went straight installing the latest driver from the AMD website (14.12) and during the installation I got again black screen during the amd video driver installation and back to point zero.
Then I did a system recovery at the moment when there were no drivers installed and tried 13.12 (older drivers): nothing.
System recovery again, Display driver uninstall and latest beta: nothing again!

I called a friend of mine and asked him if I could try my 290 on his system; when we did, the 290 went flawlessly: no black screens, no nothing playing whatever game we threw at it.

After all this, I was convinced that the problem was related to Windows, so I did a complete clean up of my pc formatting and re installing windows 8.1. Guess what... Black screen again whenever the installation program comes to the point where it has to install video drivers. Then I went crazy and tried different OSs:
Windows 8.1 again-> Black screen
Windows 7-> Black screen
Ubuntu latest LTS-> Black screen
(in the 7 and Ubuntu cases, the black screen appeared right before the log in screen like the first time I had the problem)

Now I'm running with that HD4850 and the system seems to work as good as ever with no problems whatsoever.

By the way, my 290 was doing great: low temps as I said and 1100MHz with +13mV.

I really hope you can help me.

My system: FX8320, ASUS M5A99FX PRO r2, 2X4GB Corsair 1600MHz, XFX 750W black series.

Hi shelby_92,

Did you solve your problem?

I have a really similar setup and I have a similar issue.

Here's the setup:

FX 8350
Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0
4x2 Kingston 1600 MHz
Xigmatec Vector S

I have found a workaround for my system, however I am going to RMA my card anyway.

I have set PCI-E freq to 110 mhz with PCI-E spread spectrum at auto. That solved my issue.

Mmm... Interesting solution... That confirms what I thought and it is that probably there is a problem related to PCI-E controller; it's the only thing that can explain why new cards do not work and a 4850 ends up working fine. Anyway, I'm gonna RMA the card as soon as possible. Thanks for the post :)

I have same problem with R9 290. Same motherboard too (last bios 2501). So, you fixed this problem? If yes please tell me how.

Hi man! I'm happy to say that just yesterday I solved my problem. It ended out being a somewhat "broken" CPU. I can only guess I somehow fried some CPU I/Os. As you probably know from this thread, I had a 8320; so I bought a used Athlon 2 X2 250 (cheap but 3GHz) for 20€ and when I installed it everything started working as it should.

P.S. I've read of a lot of people who solved the issue just with software; so I want to give you an advice: try every software trick you can find; then and only then change CPU (only after you checked video card and power supply xD).

Hope this helps!

Hi guys..
I have a 290x, always used via DVI on Samsung monitor 1080p.
I have bought Asus mg279q, connected to pc via display port.
When I start the pc it seems freezed at bios check, the screen is black, and nothing happens.
If I unplug display port, then power up the pc, it starts regularly, I plug the display port and everything is OK.
Or, if I start pc with the display off (no standby), it starts regularly, the I power on the monitor and everything is all right.

So.. What may be the problem.?

Thanks.
