The latest TechPowerUp front-page survey springs up some interesting findings on what our readers are most looking forward to, with the upcoming GPUs. Timed ahead of market availability of new GPUs from both NVIDIA and AMD, this poll gains relevance. At the time of writing of this article, we had received 4,650 votes over a week-long period, which amounts to a reasonable sample size. Some of the findings were surprising.

An overwhelming 60 percent of the respondents find price/performance most important. Interestingly, only 7 percent find efficiency/noise important. The second most popular choice, at 14 percent, was "4K Playability" (the ability for the GPU to play games at 4K Ultra HD resolution, at playable frame-rates). Our readers are seven times more likely to invest on 4K Ultra HD monitors (which start at $300 if you look in the right places), than picking up a VR (virtual reality) headset. A negligible 2 percent of our readers find VR most important.

The battle for next-gen APIs seems to be going Microsoft's way, as DirectX 12 excites 7 percent of our readers, compared to 3 percent for Vulkan. More people seem to be looking forward to Vulkan than VR. A sizable 5 percent of the respondents are cynical and are just happy to have more games to play with on their existing hardware.

Would it be possible to have the polls ranked?

I often find myself wavering between two or 3 of the options, so being able to e.g. mark them in order of importance or pick one's top 3 would likely yield better results.

True, AMD's marketing is not working. That said, the price of admission for VR is a barrier to entry.

Wrong! Because most of the readers never experienced VR. Plus the old 3D everything gimmick probably left some bad memory.

As a hardcore PC lover, I would say give it try before you write it off. You have no idea what you are missing.

Really I thought as PC owners we are more open minded to new tech. :(

The headline is misleading. I'm on a GTX 970 with a HTC Vive and yes I want a new GPU in order to increase performance in VR, but ultimately price will always be a factor, as it will be for 90% of the users on this site.

For that reason I chose price/performance as it will account for better VR performance by definition.

Also, your poll is single choice only. How about making it multiple choices? That will be way more accurate.

Price is definitely a barrier to entry for me to the world of VR. That really is the biggest factor. I have limited discretionary income and a more powerful graphics card and eventually a 1440p or 4k G-sync monitor (I have 1080p g-sync monitor right now) are higher on the list than a VR headset would ever be.

Heck, even if I HAD the discretionary income to do all 3 at once I wouldn't because I also have space constraints in my gaming space. I share the room with my children's toys and a couch/love seat (it's the room above my garage) and my desk and electronic stuff basically occupies a single corner of the room, maybe 7x7 feet or something less than that. I simply don't have the space to set up sensors that one of the VR headsets require or wear the bulky headsets and ignore my children (both of whom are under 4) visually.

So yeah, I won't be playing VR for a LONG, LONG time, and I don't care.

And many reader probably wont until a VR headset comes in under $300 or so, which may not happen for several generations. And until they fix the motion sickness problem. I dont want to buy a $650 piece of hardware (or even $300) if it is going to make me motion sick.

Absolutely agree! VR's main problem is that most people haven't tried it and it's really really hard to appreciate without demoing it first. Otherwise I'd expect it'd rank much higher in the poll.

Gamers in general (and especially PC gamers) should be welcoming of such high end techs. It also helps that this particular new one is like no other before it if done right.

14% for 4K gaming,.....

I'm willing to bet last year or two would have yeilded about ~2% for 4K gaming. Therefore, next year or so that 2% VR might well be ~$14 or more.

the problem about VR is not just the cost for building a rig capable for VR, it's the headset unit that makes it expensive for most of us.

What is equally most important for me is high performing GPUs to enable 4K playability in future VR HMDs, *and* many many VR games built on the DX12 or Vulkan engine. I can't separate one from the others because they all work together to create a very high quality, immersive experience.

Have you tired one? Why would you assume there is motion sickness?

I will puke at the slightest balance disturbance. Yet I was able to stay in Vive VR for a straight 6 hrs. It is way better than you think.

So stubborn. What model of VR did you try? DK1?

You did do quite the in-depth initial report on here, which I appreciated. It didn't sell me on it, but the experience described was informative.

It seems most games are eager to write it off as another gimmick, which is very very wrong. This new tech deserves way more credit than we give it.

You did do quite the in-depth initial report on here, which I appreciated. It didn't sell me on it, but the experience described was informative.

It is one of those things you have to try to see for yourself. For example when everyone is back in highschool you would always wonder what sex actually feels like. No matter how much porn you watched, nothing will compare to the moment when you finally stick your shaft into a girl's warm and unprotected flower. Review can only get you so far. You have to be brave to try it yourself and love it.

I'm ok with 3D glasses though... VR is a little out of my reach.

Same price as two mid range graphic card, or a no cotract phone. It is not that bad at all.
