I built a gaming PC with the help of a friend in December of 2015 and was having no problems up until a few days ago. I forgot to turn off my PC before going to work so it was on the whole day. I didn't see any issues until yesterday when I was playing Shadow of Mordor for an hour or 2 before it starting slowing to a crawl, dropping to very low fps. This has become regular forcing me to restart or shutdown all together when it allows me to (sometimes I can't alt-tab out or use any other means to exit the game because it is completely frozen). Not only does it do this after an hour or so of gaming, it becomes ridiculously slow when doing simple tasks such as internet browsing. I'm not sure if the problem is a driver issue, that I unwisely haven't cleaned it since it was put together or something else all together. I'm rather new to this and would be very appreciative for help. If there is anything that I am missing to diagnose this problem please let me know as I have saved up a lot of $ for this PC and really need help solving this.

How would I go about this? Sorry like I said I'm new to this
Might try CrystalDiskInfo

Check for viruses , other malware , processor fan , temp of CPU/GPU , defrag the hdd , etc

Edit : Shut it down . Unplug the PC , wait a bit and plug it again .

Crystal Disk Info is a free very small program that will give a green light if your drive is healthy. Or yellow is there are concerns and red for fail

Check CPU load(Real Temp , Task Manager) and GPU load (GPU-Z) when gaming .

Might try another antivirus . e.g. Zone Alarm Free .
Defrag the hdd

Agreed with all of the above, it sounds like a Hdd Problem.
Scan for and fix bad sectors.
Check nothing else is using it in the background - AV programs are notorious for this. Especially some of the free offerings.

If that doesn't work run a sfc (system file check)
Download the Kaspersky AV boot disk and boot from usb to run a scan.
And think about getting a small SSD for your OS

Try Safe mode, if it doesn't slow down, it's most likely a driver issue.
Also run GPU-Z and post a screen shot if it does slow down again, it may be related to graphics drivers.

Lots of good advice in here. I'd go through them one at a time and see if it can be resolved.

As it doesn't slow down right from first boot, my money is on it being a program or service accessing your HDD in the background.

I have, however, come across an issue with the 1tb WD drives that cause them to slow down, yet give good smart results.

Okay, I'm running borderlands 2 right now to see if it slows down and it is taking forever to load. I have GPU-Z open right now and can post a screenshot of what I see if that helps.

Also open up resource monitor and take a look what processes are accessing your drive when it is slow.

Alright but I don't have a clue what I should be looking for since my PC is slow right now. Like what tab or menus should I be looking at and what should I keep my eye out for?

Have you checked the temps?

Look at what is using resources. Be it CPU, RAM or disc.
