Over 144 FPS with Gsync

I have an ASUS VG248QE with Gsync module that I've been using for a while. I noticed lately that games are getting higher than 144FPS (The refresh rate of my monitor). That's never happened before unless I was running the game in Windowed mode by accident.

I'm using a GTX 970. Games are in Fullscreen mode, Gsync is enable in the Nvidia Control Panel and I'm connected via display port as I've always been. I'm also on the latest Nvidia Driver (375.86).

It's Gsync not getting enabled or is that some new driver feature?
 
normally vsync is enabled in control panel by default after you restart so many it got turned off hence higher fps.

Hrmm interesting. I loaded an older Nvidia driver (from May) and it defaults to VSYNC on. This latest drivers defaults to Use application setting. Games are capped at 144FPS again after I switched it to ON.

So Vsync has to be on in the Nvidia control panel for Gsync to work?
 
I believe Nvidia recently changed the default behaviour to just use your in game setting for V-Sync, so either go to Manage 3D Settings -> Global Settings and set Vertical sync to 'on' to have it on in all cases (simplest and easiest solution). Or set it through each games in-game options depending on how you'd like it to behave.

G-Sync will operate regardless, what you're configuring is what happens when your frame rate reaches or exceeds the max refresh rate of your display, as G-Sync only functions below that.

G-sync will still be working reguardless but it will only draw what most current frame it has in its buffer. so could get a tiny bit of input lag over 144 since new frame will be ready before display is to show it. Really though only people need more then 144fps is pro competitive gamer's
 
How does G-Sync even work? Is it plug & play when graphic card detects such module in monitor or you have to set it up separately? V-Sync settings in NV CP shouldn't affect G-Sync imo. I mean, using "Fast" V-Sync mode defeats the purpose of G-Sync anyway so to speak. Super smooth, no input lag and no tearing with framerates as high as you can get them, just discarding images that wouldn't render whole in a single display refresh. Which at least in my book makes it even better than G-Sync solution which should only go up to the monitor refresh rate. Unless they've changed that somehow recently...

You don't understand how either works. :p They work TOGETHER, not doing the same thing. Fast V-sync gets rid of tearing ABOVE monitor refresh, G-Sync works BELOW monitor refresh.


Fast Sync is a buffer in the GPU, G-sync is buffer in the monitor. :P TOTALLY different things, and different hardware.

No, Vsync doesn't work like this and neither does Gsync.

Gsync replaces Vsync. Vsync should be disabled, otherwise Gsync doesn't work. Vsync is designed to cap your FPS at your monitor's refresh rate, but Gsync dynamically adjusts your refresh rate to your FPS in real time. If you are capable of higher than 144 FPS in any game, you will want to cap your FPS. I use 120 FPS cap standard and 120hz refresh.


Note: Some games run in what's called "Windowed Full Screen Borderless" mode. This is NOT true full screen. Example Game: Blade and Soul

In Blade and Soul's case, Gsync does not work in this mode and can cause insanely low FPS as a result. It was a combination of poor game code and bad driver development from NCSoft & Nvidia. This issue occurs only when you enable Gsync in full screen & Windowed mode. You can force BNS into true full screen mode where Gsync will work, but since then NCSoft broke their game even more, this has a negative impact on performance as well. In short, you will not want to use Gsync in this particular game, and cap your refresh and/or fps at 120 fps & 120hz.

It is ok to have a higher refresh rate than FPS, but NOT ok to have higher FPS than refresh rate. That is where you start missing frames entirely. In the case of FPS based games, this can be a damning technical limitation because you won't see where that next 1 shot kill comes from. (You literally will never see it coming)

Example of good refresh vs bad refresh: 60hz + 120 FPS = You miss 1 out of every 2 frames, due to limitations of your monitor. 120hz + 60 fps = You don't miss any frames your PC is just not capable of manufacturing higher than 60 FPS and your monitor capability exceeds your PC's performance output level which is a good thing.

That being said, I have a monitor that I can overclock the refresh rate to 185hz. Some monitors can overclock refresh rates, but others can't.

i notice that when i run a benchmark like heaven or valley at 1080 my max frame rate never goes over 144.. i think my g-sync monitor caps at that level..

it does lower some lower resolution benchmark scores but otherwise isnt a problem.. g-sync is really of benefit when the frame rates are lower.. it dosnt really do much at super high frame rates..

v-sync needs to be off for g-sync to work..
