As far as I know there are no 8600 "hard/softmods" because there are no pipelines to unlock.

They are simply clocked differently.

As for modding to an 88xx, they are completely different GPU's.

Don't bother with hardware direct X 10 on a budget. You'll get better results looking for an older DX9 hardware card, because the DX10 cards have a premium because they're new.

Its like buying a Chevy cobalt with the super shiny rear spoiler, instead of a porshe.

The same rule applied for when direct X 9 cards were available. Yeah, sure the radeon 9550 maybe had DX9 support. But in order to use the DX9 shaders you had to turn everything else to minimums, once games started actually using them.

DX has 2 parts, Hardware and Software. DX9 cards will run DX10 software perfectly fine.

I'm not saying don't bother with DX10, I'm saying don't factor a purchase on it, because it really doesn't make that much of a difference. by time it does matter, you'll be looking at the next shiny thing.

well my budget isn't too tight, its just that any88xx card costs (i live in south africa) 2 much. so upgrading to a 86xx is not advisable? any idea when dx10 cards will become cheaper? i can get a second hand 7900GTX (XFX) from 1 of my budies for about the same price as a 8600gt, do u think its a g00d buy?

7900GS looks to have a decent performance advantage over the 8600GT/GTS.

I really can't say DX10 is worth it atm. This card would struggle to maintain great framerates w/ DX10 shaders and aa/af enabled.

Disabling AA/AF may change this, but then you're losing AA/AF for... different shaders.

Also the 8600gts will perform better than a 7900gs , 7900gt, x1950pro in alot of games at lower resolutions and even reach a 7900gtx performance level with overclocking and moderate to high resoultions. It has newer and more shader 32 than the 7900gs, 7900gt and 7900gtx but loses out at higher resolution due to less ram and 128 bit interface. Mine however is really very fast and plays everthing at or near max settings jc16 has the same card as I do he will agree I'm sure.

why bother the card will do 750/1175 to 800/2300 already without a volt mode

The card has the same PCB regardless of brand, the volt points should be the same. And yes, I can match an X1900XTX in most games with the resolution under 1600x1200.

You have to remember though guys that voltmodding an 8600GT will generally only bring limited returns, I say that because the card is limited to only 75W of power feed and once the juice hits that limit then it aint gonna go no faster.

He is talking about an 8600GT not GTS.

Ah well XFX 8600gt is very fast I would NOT!!! volt mode it because it is supposed to pull just under 75 mghz 71 (mghz) if you volt mode it and it pulls say 76 mghz your going to kill your motherboard thats why gts have a extra power cord. My gts will run fine without it pugged in but it is there to prevent a overvolt of your PCI express slot.

I do believe the term you're looking for is "watts". Voltage*amperage=Wattage used. As the PCI-E slot is restricted to 75W iirc.

Attempting to pull >75w should in no way kill your motherboard, it will just be stressing your PWM, and if anything should just cause a shutdown.

My advice would probably be, if you want a 8600GT.....and I can see the sense in it because already they have reached 8600GTS speeds and beyond with the voltmod, personally I would go for one of the 512MB versions because that will really help when you put on the AA/AF and go for one with a fitted 3rd party cooler so if you do voltmodyou already have the better cooling.....Galaxy are doing some nice cards in the 8 series, they are known for good quality components that overclock well if you want a 256MB card or gainward again use high end components and do a 512MB card. They (Galaxy) also come with a Zalman cooler as standard I beleive.

Wouldn't a 128bit memory bus not really take too much advantage of 512mb of ram? It'd kinda be like my dad's MSI6200AX 64bit with 256mb of ram, which is silly. If you ask me, Nvidia should drop the 8600gts and make an 8800gs with a 256 bit memory bus for around $220.

How would it damage the motherboard?

The motherboard would simply not provide the power.

Its not gonna ZOMG ASPLODE if you hit 75w. That would be some shoddy engineering

Not to mention quite the safety hazard.

They have a power cable, because they draw more, and SPEC is only 75w. That means they can only guarantee 75 provided via motherboard. If they released a video card using more than 75w via motherboard, it would not get a "pci-e" blessing and thus not comply with SPEC and they wouldn't be able to advertise "Pci-e" compatable.

If the PWM is overstressed it will overheat, and first end up lowering the voltage provided.

Voltage will fall below stability levels far before the mosfets overheat and "damage" themselves.

Your wrong bro the 8600gts cards will run without the power cable. I didn't makes this up read about it. That cable is there to prevent overvolting of the PCI-e slot during overclocking. If you wish to advise someone to do something to damage there motherboard then thats fine. I own a 8600gts do you? I also have read several articles on this subject and you are wrong. The card draws 71 w but when overclocked there is a chance it can draw too much on the PCI E slot( it can give 75w and no more) without causing damage. Thats why a 8600gts which is basically an overclocked 8600gt has a external power cable.
