In a bid to improve overall gaming experience on their Windows 10 operating system, Microsoft will introduce a new feature on their next big OS update. "Game Mode" is Microsoft's take on a modern, console-like take on the CPU and GPU of any given user system, so long as they are running the as of yet upcoming "Creators" update for Windows 10.

Essentially, "Game Mode" is an optional setting which dedicates more of the available CPU and GPU resources to a given gaming application - whether on Windows' new UWP or the good-old Win32 games (though Microsoft was clear in that they expect the feature to have more of an impact on UWP games simply because "Game Mode" then has more information on the game's requirements and performance profiles). This means that less of your system's resources will be available to and used by background tasks, and should make itself visible not so much on peak frame-rates, but on a arguably more important metric: a more consistent, less "stuttery" frame-rate.

"Game Mode" will automatically set CPU core affinity and thread priority, thus reducing thread and performance contention from otherwise non-essential background apps and processes; on the GPU side, more time slices. "Game Mode" will play along with other technologies, such as NVIDIA's GeForce Experience and, one expects, AMD's ReLive, though the interaction between the upcoming game mode and, for example, AMD's Chill features are still to be completely clarified.

Microsoft has been heavily updating the gaming capabilities of Windows, pushing it closer and closer to the gaming environment on their Xbox One console. Game Mode appears to be another nice addition to Microsoft's gaming approach, though, and it should be available tomorrow in the next Fast Ring build of the Windows Insider Preview.

Good to see microsoft giving us gamers some love :)

Hope the windows 7 update process is getting easier for you all too.

Spread the love!

Oh, so it provides DirectX 11, privacy, and slightly reduced overall performance? Cool.

I already have my own game mode activated:

Metered Ethernet Connection Enabled.

I wouldn't be surprised if, to use this update properly, you'd be forced to enable some of the features many deem necessary to disable, such as telemetry stuff and / or others, or this update would do that for you ...

I wont be surprised to not notice any difference with this mode until it craches the game I am playing.

"creators" " founders"

I call it about bloody time, although i feel that they should just do a stripped version of Win10 for gamer's and have done with it.

Free is nice but forced is not as we don't use computers for gaming.

Of course its Microsoft " The Company that Cares for and Respects its customer Privacy"
Any such changes are Needed for Proper SnoopingFeedback and product Improvement ( Remember YOUR THE PRODUCT now ).

Smells like ReadyBoost.

.

That's cute, as we both know they have doing it on purpose, to try and increase Windows 10 market share, by any devious means possible. They've always been a dirty company and it's sad that so many people support those kinds of practices.

I don't support dirty practices and Windows 10 has it's fair share, but I also recognize that Windows 7 is on "extended support" and was always scheduled to be. I fully expected more bugs to come your way at this point, and you should have too.

What I don't appreciate is "cute" comments about how all "Windows 10 users are beta testers" when we are ALL suffering from microsofts elimination of their q&a department, not just Windows 10 users. Windows 7 users just do that suffering with more privacy and a much less up to date kernel.

I do wonder how long people will wail on the privacy thing. Anyone remember the uproar over the backdoors Intel Management Engine and AMD Platform Security Processor? And how often do we hear about them now?

People will whine on and on because even joe moron public is now aware of the Surveillance undertaken by the likes of Google microsoft and national Goverments

Those examples never hit the public consciousness like the Surveillance of win 10 ( and 7./8.1 ) or the Super Tracking Cookie that defy's Deletion
or Government oversight of the Internet

Is it just me or does Microsoft seems more desperate than ever trying to bring us or make us go to Windows 10. o_O

1. DX12 comes with free fairy dust
2. Free Windows 10
3. Windows 7 forced updates to Windows 10
4. What's next make Trump give a executive order for us to upgrade :banghead:

Someone out there please make a new intuitive, gaming friendly operating system I beg you :respect:

I don't know what the talk is in this thread about Windows 7 updates. I'm on W7 and I have 0 problems with Windows updates. It's working better than ever. The updates are more rare now and come in 100MB+ packs, which is much better than before. What maybe people fail to see is that the updates are not a feature but a necessity. I for one will be very happy when they will make W7SP2 and then just release very few critical updates after it. Updates do nothing for me, it's just a waste of time, the less they are the better...

I still think those are way worse.

does that come with a cappuccino?

talking about m$ spying on its users didnt do much good, they didnt change anything to appease the screamers.

For the record, NVidia and AMD already do a large portion of what Game Mode claims to do within GFE and... whatever AMD's is called.

Next : "Your game/STEAM/UI/MY is not compatible with Windows Game Mode (TM) , install not possible.
Buy it with your Windows Gaming Store.

So they slapped it in top on Xbox/Game DVR app which itself is causing performance issues? :D Some games as CS:GO and Dota would give you a warning if Game DVR is detected:

I have noticed actual FPS drops in Arma 3 too. To disable this crap you MUST sign in with MS account or, be prepared to use registry editor and Power Shell :) Bravo, well done MS. As always.

My own "game mode" is far more efficient: i have removed all (except Edge...) built-in apps, connection is set to "metered", removed more than half entries from Task Scheduler, Windows Update and few other services stopped.

Why can't they release something like LTSB edition but stripped down even more? There are tons of users that don't need all that bloat that comes with OS. We need an operating system, not software suite. This should be optional.
