Okay, So the rig is built, and overclocking isn't going too well? (Kaby Lake)

Hey friends. I finally built this new rig. Specs in sidebar. Absolutely thrilled so far except for OC performance.

Here's what I got- XMP on with DDR4-3000 Crucial LPX

4.4 Stable @ auto voltage

Cannot go any higher, even with voltage at 1.25v I cannot pass 4.4. I see some people at 5GHz on air. Did I lose the silicon lottery? (Ill Amazon RMA if need be, lol)

Seems like the only way to get above 4.4GHz is with voltage higher than 1.3. I tried voltage at 1.45 briefly but got too hot.

Anything I am missing here?

Buy a better cooler, add more voltage. I read that Kabylake clocks better with lower RAM speeds.

But 4.4Ghz is okay for a 3.8Ghz chip.

You want higher - cool it better and try again.

Gonna do some tweaking and report back. What is the max voltage I should be touching? And with a hyper 212 evo I am getting around 80c with any voltage over 1.300.

stay at 1.31 max, and also try to lower or disable XMP and see results, the problem there might be the cooler that allow the temps to rise since isn't made for OC,
rememeber to use HWinfo to see moar values, run sensors only,

Okay. Here are my results. Same for XMP enabled and disabled. 1.312v and 4.5Ghz seems to be the absolute max. at 85c.

well, i guess you aint going to far with that air cooler, so you might replace it with a better air cooler or move on to a Water cooler, like the conventional AIO's or well, the custom loops, also delid its a quite great option,

What are you using to test with as to why your cpu is hitting 85C?

To me it sounds like the cpu cooler isn't seated correctly, is missing the thermal compound or still has a plastic sheet on the base of the coolers cpu contact point. Make sure no plastic is on the cpu or the base of the heatsink.

Regards,

Think this is the best assessment, high Vcore and mid range air cooling don't make the perfect combination. Get the chip under water or under a larger chunk of metal and go from there.

The CPU is mounted with the cooler correctly and tight against the surface, with MX-4 and the sticker removed. I thought the Hyper 212 was good for an OC?

Oh the woo's of over clocking. you have a top of the line CPU a good board n a $20 cooler is why, open the window let the cold air hit your cooler then add voltage waa lah

I'm shocked that 212 isn't good to 1.3V on that thing...

What test are you reaching 80C in at 1.3V? 80C is also FINE. Keep it under 90C, so you still have headroom in whatever you are testing it against.

You can't build on a budget and expect the same results as people who spent real money on good cooling - if you really want a chance at 5 GHz, buy at least a 240-280mm radiator, and possibly a larger case (yours fits such a radiator only in the front, and has very poor air flow). Everything comes at a price. Your job is to select the cheapest parts that will do the intended job. Do some research, save your pennies, and decide if the whole maximum OC thing is really worth all the trouble and expense...4.4 is still faster than 95% of all systems...

I dont think the OP has any experience with delidding. Delidding and working with liquid metal takes someone who knows the horrible outcome if failed.

Prime 95 27.7 and newer versions supports the AVX instruction which results in a higher load and core temperature. This will result in a lower overclockability, but a higher stability. However, almost no program or game can handle the AVX instruction. If you’re not using anything which features AVX, you can use Prime 95 26.6 without AVX so you might reach higher clocks.

https://www.computerbase.de/2017-01/intel-kaby-lake-test-core-i7-7700k-i5-7600k/4/
--scroll down to temperature with avx.

and in bios there should be:
AVX Instruction Core Ratio Negative Offset: This setting reduces CPU core frequencies by the applied value when an AVX workload is run. The thermal output of AVX workloads is an order of magnitude higher than for non-AVX workloads, which is why this setting has been introduced.

I had never done it before I did my 6700K, but point taken.

However, there are de-lidding services available...

idle temps are 34c.

If thats measured with real Temp (core temps) it's quite high, if it's in the UEFI CPU temp, still a bit high I'd say, unless your ambient temp is quite high.

My CPU's core temps are around 22~23 idle with a 20.5 ambient, I got the same cooler, just a Skylake CPU.

Idle temps are USELESS for the most part. Also, the bios has a slight load on it, so temps I the low 30s there are ok.. but again, it's the LOAD temps which matter.

If it's idle already sitting lets say 8 degrees higher than ambient, your load temps will be higher as well....
