Soma for me is one the very best true survival horror games i have ever played. For me it ranks with Clive Barker's Undying, Silent Hill 2, Dead Space Martyr and Alan Wake in terms of atmospheric suspense and story telling. It has got a tremendous story, deep suspense, amazing atmosphere having experienced the deep underworld of the ocean, MASSIVE exploration options together with the ability to perform nice movement tricks, top notch ambient sounds and sound design, and true horror. While gameplay might be linear at times and you can not shoot enemies in this game (like in Outlast), the rest options are well designed for a horror game.
I liked this game so much, that i made a video, showing the game's awesome exploration elements and movement tricks. I rarely do this type of stuff from games those i have finished; if it happens, that means the game was really memorable.
Even if you don't like Outlast types of games, where you can not engage the enemies, and just hide, this is extreme something else and should be tried never the less. It does have that Penumbra object/item control method, which can piss of at times, but much less prominent.
Watch in full screen only, or you will miss some of the editing details i've put in this video.
Have fun!
