Specifically looking for Win 7 Pro x64 OEM .ISO... and preferably with service pack(s).

Have key and older .ISO but windows keep looking for a CD/DVD driver when I start the first part of the install process, and won't let me go any further. I'm booting and installing from USB, no CD/DVD is installed. This is on a laptop, and I'm not going to activate it, just need to install for the 30 day trial and some testing I'm doing. TIA

Hmmm... I do have a spare OEM key kicking around, going to give it a try and report back. As always, thanks!

Windows 7 lacks native support for USB 3+. Try to force the port to operate at USB 2.0 or just download and load a driver.

Yes. USB controller present in their chipsets require XHCI driver, no matter if the port used is USB2 or USB3.
Win7 has no such driver, so it natively does not support USB on those platforms at all.

You either have to integrate the driver manually, or get an ISO with already integrated drivers.
Sometimes there are additional emulation options available, but don't expect to see them on a laptop.

I remember Gigabyte offered a tool that integrates the XHCI driver into any ISO. not sure if it works for other motherboards though. Here's the link just in case

http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Utility/mb_utility_windowsimagetool.zip

I found the drivers elsewhere, but not a slipstrem tool like that, and WIn 10 will not let me copy .sys files from two different .ZIP files I downloaded. Wow this is a bitch...

So, I'm on the ASROCK site, my laptop has a Core i7-6820HQ CPU, how I know if it's Intel 100, 200, N3000 or J3000 series?

pretty sure thats chipset generation. Since you have a 6xxx series cpu its probably 100.

I don't know if it's Windows 10, but the MS Win 7 USB Boot tool to make bootable USB disk is failing. One USB drive it kept failing on start of copying, the second completed, but at end couldn't make bootsect (non bootable). I'm about to shoot myself.

Nice. And no malware detected.

I use Rufus to copy ISO's to USB. It has every option that I've ever needed and is an excellent tool for making bootable USB install drives.

Recommend the portable version as it will run in any Windows environment, whether installed or WinPE.

Sure beat the tool from Microsoft! I'm guessing it was something todo with Win 10

I now have Win 7 Pro x64 Sp1 installed! I even activated it with what I thought was and OEM key

I couldn't have done this on Win 10 alone. The USB 3.0 drivers I found had .SYS files and Windows 10 would NOT let me copy them. Is there a setting for that somewhere? I couldn't boot with any of the slipstream tools @W1zzard or @Muaadib suggested, it just would not load the drivers!

What I did was make a folder on the target hard drive with the USB 3.0 drivers. After a few tries, it finally read the drivers after browsing to the HDD and continued with the install. During the install, I even wiped the partition on the HDD, drivers were already in memory, so it continued no problem.

God what a painful day. Thanks all...

You managed to work it out: congratz!

I had many issues when i moved to Ryzen 5 and could not get Win 7 to install properly because of USB not being detected but i fixed it ... by removing Win 7 ... permanently ...

Now using Ubuntu.

Based on your description, my guess is Windows Defender preventing the copy. Would need screen shot to know for sure as that could be a couple of other things as well.

Glad you got it worked out!

That's a bold move! Have you given Linux Mint a try? I actually prefer Mint to the standard Ubuntu distro's.

I'd really need to find out, since I just upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7... and want to like it. If I get a chance this week, I'll post what I saw.

I have two Ubuntu rigs running WCG. For a free OS, it's pretty amazing.

I just waited for 200+ updates, so I'll take you up on that, lol

Bolder then you think: before this, i had literally zero experience with Linux.

I have not tried Mint: so far, only Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Give it a try, you might like it. https://linuxmint.com/
Have tried all four of the main variants, Mate, Cinnamon, XFCE and KDE. Like them all, but currently use the XFCE version because it has a lighter resource requirement and I like the "feel" better. All of them boot the "Live" USB drive so you can try them without installation. The idea behind the Mint project is to give Windows users a variant of Linux that people can transition into a little easier than even Ubuntu.
