Intel Kaby Lake-X Processors Get Early Retirement

Never said it offered more, just that it has been fun to play with. Also, most of the 7700K CPUs do not have this good of an IMC. Many of the high speed RAM makers wanted this chip for testing, as it was one of the only ones to hit 4600MHz reliably just by clicking the XMP profile.
I am curious, does it offer a better IMC than Coffee Lake?

It it is a horrible marketing and manifacturing decisions.
Its thermals are not as great
its core count fits 2016 standards


If proposed to me at zero cost, ill take an X299+7740X combo over an X370+1600X one. Sorry.
In that case you might as well say you take an X299 + 7980XE combo.
Fact is even Intel's other offerings trash that ridiculous rebranded 7700k bonded to a LGA2066 socket.
Even the new i5s are Hex-cores now, I take those and a decent Z370 broad over that 7740X any day.

And on some X299 broads, the 7740X offers LESS usable PCI-E slots than the 7700K + Z270 combo.

Still a better buy than 7700K with some ridiculous ROG maximus board. Better go 7740X and a mid-range x299.
My thought at the time was, it's an i7 with the best single thread performance, in an X299 board (designed to run chips with higher TDP), so maybe it could be clocked higher than mainstream chips, since the board shouldn't be a limiting factor. And some people are easily reaching 5.2 with them, so maybe the 7740X was the best CPU for overclockers, in it's day?

The problem with that is, there are plenty of high end Z270 broads that can handle as much power, if not more than some X299 broads, so even then it doesn't make much sense.
It isn't that difficult to push a 7700K to 5.2Ghz delided anyway, it is usually the matter of doing it at a reasonable voltage.
In fact I managed to push my 6700k to 5Ghz with custom loop water cooling, before I gave it to a friend.

What ? They were top gaming CPUs at the time, overclocked past 5GHz easily, took +4000 RAM, sold for exactly the same price as 7700K.
Worse buy than z270+7700k - obviously. Worst price/performance - not with the overpriced 1800x that could not overclock and x370 with just one full speed pci-e 3.0 x4 m.2 capability vs 24 pci-e 3.0 pch lanes on x299. 7740x+x299 was still cheaper than 1800x + decent x370 board, and a much better choice for enthusiast gamers. You could run a 6x full speed pci-e drive array on x299 vs puny one full speed m.2 on x370.

More like 2008 standards... Nehalem had 4c/8t back in 2008. The Core i7 920 wasn't particularly insane priced product.

Yup, pretty much. But uhh... yeah. Even with all of those issues, the 7740X's per-core could be pushed to eye-watering performance.
 
But why would you buy an expensive HEDT plagtform to run mainstream CPU on it? Get a bloody loan if you don't have cash and buy a higher tier CPU for X299 and quad channel memory and you're set for 5+ years guaranteed. X58 lasted me more than 5 years, X99 I have the same plans with, and whatever comes next, it'll follow the same path. If you buy well, it'll last you long. If you skimp on specs, it won't. Usually lowest tier HEDT are best option. That applied to Core i7 920 and so did to Core i7 5820K. With overclocking, you get them to higher tier levels for 0€ cost. Maybe a bit for a better board, but that's about it.
 
I am not surprised at all, IMO they shouldn't even have released these repackaged Kaby Lakes.

That's pure performance.
Intel example at the time, i5 7400 and a H110 motherboard. A lot lower price with good enough gaming performance.
AMD example at the time, 1700 in a B350 board, overclocked. 16 threads, good enough gaming performance, an upgrade path for 3 years.

Yes, but it's better than going for a quad core with too few pci-e lanes and only dual channel, on a platform made for something a lot better.
Put a 1300X on an A320, still a better value than what the 7740X offered.

Your analogies are so intricate only you can understand them. How does a 320 board with 1300x offers me better value than 7740x. It can't handle my gtx 1080 with a 165hz monitor so it's absolutely shit value to me or anyone running a similar setup, no matter what the price difference is. Meanhwile 7740x can handle my comfiguration absolutely flawlessly, and x299 offers HUGE storage capabilities for perfromance nvme drives.

You gotta understand the limitations of your price/performance theory. If you wanna play 144/165hz you simply CAN'T cheap out on low-end cpu,board and ram. If my aim is +100 fps, then getting a cpu and mobo that can do 50 fps is money wasted, even if it costs me a quarter of what intel offers in the enthusiast gaming segment.

1300x is absolutely CRAP, all it should ever drive is gtx 1050/1050Ti class GPU.

If you need performance for 165hz, then price performance is meaningless for you. Go for the best the money can buy. 99% of us game on 60hz and can't or don't need to pay that much.
 
Why else would you buy a 7740x ? You don't pair it with a low-end GPU. Is that what you meant ? That 7740x is worse price/performance for 1080p/60 or lower ? I mean, yes, that is technically true, but good grief... why would anyone even think of a comparison like that ?
In your opinion, is gtx 1030 better performance/price than 1080Ti SLI for 1080p 30 fps ?
 
Yes, it is. You can game perfectly with a 1030 at the lowest details. This is price performance, not best experience.
Anyway the best price performance is the 1060 with a g4560.
 
No, but I'm glad you managed to come to an agreement with the points you made yourself.

Best price/performance combo is i3 8100 and 1060 but g-sync monitors cost an arm and a leg (I got two, spent a total of $1300 :cry: but I absolutely love them :respect: variable refresh rate is a huge milestone for gaming). 2c/4t can't deliver steady fps for that GPU, 1060 is plenty for 1080p. I'd say rx 570 is all you need for 1080p/60 high-ultra and you can shave off up to 20% as long as you can find that rx 570 mear msrp.

If I was building a budget rig, most bang for the buck that is, I'd go with i3 8100 and rx 570 + 1080p/75hz freesync. Nothing comes close to that. Period.

I was talking about options during the 7740X release, but yeah, that's the best, price performance wise.
I still think the 7740X is a joke, a proper 1151 chipset would be better than dumbing down a platform just for extra 100mhz.
 
.......a lot of people (me included at first) with the opinion that these chips served no purpose....and a few that actually owned them and understood what they were saying they were good chips and they had fun with it....
I salute those who took the plunge and I myself stand corrected. Looking forward to whats coming next though. I'm totally on Amd's platform right now but i already got a new case waiting for the next big thing.......
 
What are you talking about? a 1600X @ 3.9 gets like 1300 CB and a 7740x @ 5.3 gets ~1200 in a fully threaded benchmark. the 1600X gets smoked in almost everything but specific heavily-threaded apps (which are still not the norm) and multi-threaded, non-gaming benchmarks and even then it just barely eeks out a victory.

LOL Intel fan boy confirmed.. So my 1600X @ 3.9ghz gets a higher score than a 7740x @ 5.3ghz??? But the Intel cpu is still better...right..

Your 1600x is slightly faster in a minority of cases, and much slower in the majority of cases.

Btw, i own a 1700 and love it, but your initial comment was incorrect.
 
Kicking with 7700K @ 5GHz and I still say that these were the most stupid launch ever. At least you can say that I'm not wearing Intel glasses even tho I'm having Intel CPU.
