Hello

I have a ASUS ROG gl502vy with Intel 6700hq and nvidia gtx 980m 8GB.

While Playing games that my graphic card can run on high settings (like rise of tomb raider), my notebook starts to throttle. I used Throttlestop to undervolt my cpu for -125mV. Though less than before but still I experience throttling and when I checked GPU-Z perfcap reason was pwr. What can I do to solve this problem??

thank you
PS. gpu-z preferences are to show the highest temp reached by cpu and gpu tmps.gif

what are the rooms ambient temperatures?

have you taken control of your system fans when your gaming? By setting them to 100%?

Get it from Asus web site or the web . https://www.asus-driver.com/downloa...Center_Win10_64_VER1012.zip-drivers-free.html

Yeah After Burner wont grab the system fans on your Asus rig...bummer i know, but the Asus Gaming Center will. I use it on the rig in my system specs.

EDIT if you dont have a laptop cooler make sure you raise the back of your laptop up a bit, like with a pencil or something too so the intake vents on the bottom have some room for sucking in the air.

Edit 2 oh yeah...Welcome to TPU! :lovetpu:

Haha, thank you

I installed gaming center but there are no options for fan speed there, actually there are no options at all, I would say you can only monitor some info there.
And about the cooler I dont have one but i use something to raise the back

edit 1: I Installed Asus GPU Tweak 2 for fan speed but still couldn't find an option to control fan speed, but it provided an option called "GPU Temp Target" which i guess customize the temperature limit for throttling, after applying gaming mode with 101 degrees gpu temp target, my perfcap reason changed from pwr to thrm. Still experiencing throttling.tmp2.gif

edit2:after putting it on silent mode (reduced memory frequency ) both pwr and thrm now :|

man i just can not understand why Asus is locking control of your system fan from you on a rig that has a GTX 980 in it none the less.....well this is a first for that kind of set up for me...i have seen it on other types of laptops but not on one with a 980 in it...jeapers...I dont know what to advise you to do if you can not gain control of the system fans other than maybe a more aggressive fan curve which i think you mentioned being able to do..? Please post a screen shot of the Asus Gaming Software main screen when its launched...thnx

these are the two apps that i used for fan control, the second one is gaming center

Okay there may still be hope check out this thread and the tool download and see if it works on your rig! Let me know if you need help with that thread to get going...the download link for the tool is here>>> https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/releases and it is called NoteBookFanControl.1.5.3-beta.setup.exe <<<also a download link

it was talked about in this thread below
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthre...ng-heavy-loads&p=447787&viewfull=1#post447787

1. are you gaming and using your laptop over a table, desk or hard surface? or over math, clothes or so?
2. are you able to install and run EVGA PRecision X?

I used the software, there was no profiles for my laptop, still I tested all the asus profiles, but none of them worked for my laptop
edit: after a restart only one of my fans is working on 100% i guess, maybe its because of those profiles that i changed and activated
edit2: i guess i did it, both fans at 100%, lets test it
edit3: still throttling :( maybe undervoltaging will help?

1. i use it on a hard surface and i raise the end so the airflow is well
2. i installed it and ran it with no problems, still no options for fan control

that option does not let you tweak ?
also when did you notice temps and fans not controlable? is old computer?

Regards

no it does not let me change the fan speed
well i never tried to control fan speed, but now that i wanted to play with it, throttling is really bothering, imagine having a gtx980m and not being able to use it :|
and the laptop is not that old i would say, it was made about 2 years ago, asus gl502vy

and still over warranty?

do you have someting to check temps for CPU and GPU? she could throttle because of heat from CPU, dried / broken bond of the thermalpaste, or also needs to be taken apart, dusted and cleaned for better heat disipation,

no it does not let me change the fan speed
have you contacted asus support or laptop seller ?

Heatsink clogged with dust or GPU doesn't make proper contact with the heatpipes anymore for some reason. Downclocking to 130 mhz due to thermals is not normal , not even on a laptop. Manual fanspeed control wont fix that , that should never happen.

Or is it not going down to 130 mhz ? I can't tell from the picture. At what frequency does it stay ?

Actually come to think of it....What the hell are you using to generate a workload on the GPU and CPU for the tests in your screen shots, with some apps this is actually a good temperature...lol....let us know that please. PLEASE don't say it's Furmark...

I really dont know about warranty
I undervolted cpu to make sure it was not from cpu, but cant be really sure because they share heatpipes
and about asus, I haven't made contact with them :)), trying to solve the problem myself

I think while Idling, the gpu frequencies come down to preserve the battery
and it does not downclock to THAT :D during heavy load

I have to try change the thermal pastes, maybe it'll get better, but i dont think thats the reason because from the first day when I wanted to play Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag with my noteboook in the highest setting possible and 4K resolution I experienced throttling but I simply put that into 1080p and played, but now even on 1080p on Tomb Raider(2013) and Rise of Tomb Raider(2015) I experience throttling. Which is not normal if you see the charts for GTX980m. Normally It has to run them ok in around 40~50 fps(on highest settings).

No, of course it's not furmark :)) , I simply tried to played Rise of Tomb Raider on the highest setting(minuse the hair setting which is for AMD) and fullHD resolution
And about the temps, if they are normal how come I have throttling?

Then at what frequency does it stay , I have a feeling there is nothing wrong. That GPU will always throttle due to heat , this is a laptop, you will never stop that.

I have a feeling this is a "returned" user...

Regardless, from everything I see, nothing is wrong here.

Well Using gpu-z the only thing that i monitored was that the frequencies did not change during the load, the only thing that bothered was the throttles during the load and the perfcap reason in the gpu-z which was "pwr", do u mean that U can never use the full power of a gaming laptop because they will always throttle due to bad cooling systems no matter what??

What do mean by "returned"?

and I clearly stated what was wrong, how could you not get it :-?

You are still not telling me at what frequency does it stays , for example in one of the games you said. That GPU should normally hover around 1000-1100 mhz.

do u mean that U can never use the full power of a gaming laptop because they will always throttle due to bad cooling systems no matter what??

Pretty much , hell even some desktop cards will throttle as well.

well you should, or got this computer second handed?
also, since heat pipes are shared to cool CPU and GPU the problem might be there, there is no enough airflow to help heat pipes to do their job, so this might point to cooling, broken bond in thermal paste due handling, carrying and moving your device, for name a few, so take it apart, clean cooling vents, heat pipes and proper thermal interface material might show a great result, makes no sense for me that a computer with a GTX980m build it cannot handle it, and throttles because of heat or overload, battery malfunction is another problem or power, make sure to use a tester and check power rated on the charger / power supply adapter from it, i had a gigabyte laptop that did something similar on CPU, throttle because of faulty power adapter, almost fried my machine,

Well Using gpu-z the only thing that i monitored was that the frequencies did not change during the load, the only thing that bothered was the throttles during the load and the perfcap reason in the gpu-z which was "pwr", do u mean that U can never use the full power of a gaming laptop because they will always throttle due to bad cooling systems no matter what??
i guess he means or try to point that cooling is the problem on most gaming laptops, cooling is affected by dust or craps, will trottle,

Pretty much , hell even some desktop cards will throttle as well.
Desktop cards mostly throttle due heat and overheat, cooler is not enough to keep the card in the desired ranges, so throttles or low frequency and power down to help cooler handle heat,

this is the frequencies that card is working in

thats too bad, since in the notebookcheck.com review of this model there was no talk of throttling and no company will ever tell the problems, you can never know what U are buying :-<

If performance is being limited because of "power", then fan speed isn't going to change that, you'd have to be able to raise the power limit by moving the power slider to the right. Access to this feature is sometimes blocked.
