i7-5820k core is running hotter than the rest uneven temperature

During aida64 stress run I noticed the temperatures are spread out unevenly. This is consistent with other benchmark stress programs I ran. Cores 5 and 6 are usually 5-10C less than the other cores.

Is this normal? whats could be wrong?

Yes that is normal, my 5930K does the same.

Same happened with my dead 4790K. The two outer cores were cooler and the two inner cores hotter.

That's because they get used less, work load is normally provisioned to certain cores, primarily core 1, then load increases on others as needed, instead of an even spread across all cores.

Running a program or performing other routine tasks load core 1 and momentarily produce temps higher than other cores as @Caring1 states. Benchmarks synthesize a specific usage adamantly.

Installed a new cooler few days beforehand. Temps have since stabilized to within a few degrees during more typical constant loads like games or cpu heavy programs. IF you are really worried you could inspect heatsink coverage and reapply TIM or revisit your cooling solution as a whole.

Interesting!

Thanks for the replies, folks.

I looked up an old anandtech article on Haswell-E processors and according to this silicon diagram all the Haswell-E chips have 8 cores with four cores positioned on each side. The 6 core versions are no exception but according to anandtech they will have 2 of the cores disabled. This may have something to do with the temperature differences, presumably the cores adjacent to the disabled ones should run cooler and the cores near uncore may run hotter?

any ideas how to check which 2 cores are disabled?

Those 2 right there.

No dude. Unless you've got thermal x-ray vision. And that's not a thing...so...

I've got two 3770Ks. Both with one core that runs WAY cooler than the other 3 under full load/100% CPU usage(well...one's dead now...but when it was running it did). Explain that. Actually...don't bother. Because it doesn't matter. Hint...hint...;)
