My GF's Threadripper editing rig has been excessively loud the past few days, even though she hasn't been using it for anything particularly demanding. Even at idle, its fans never seem to settle down. Taking a look at it today, reported temps are in the high 60s to low 70s even at idle. Something is definitely fishy. After rebooting a couple of times to rule out weirdness from repeated sleep/wake cycles, the CPU doesn't budge from it's bottom-most clock speed of ~560MHz. (I guess the fact that it's "usable" at those clocks speaks to the utility of a 12c24t CPU!) Before the reboots, I saw it reach ~2GHz, though I don't know for how many cores or how long.
I've pretty much concluded that the pump in the AIO (Enermax LiqTech 240 TR4) must have died. The block gets really, really hot, and the radiator is cool to the touch. I plugged the pump's power cable (4-pin pwm) into a 12V power brick I have, and it seems like it spins up - there's a mometary "buzzing" sound before it settles into a very, very quiet hum - but I can't feel any vibrations. Of course the 'AIO_PUMP' header on the Asus X399-e board doesn't report RPM. Still, is there anything else that might be causing this, beyond a dead pump?
Edit. Guess I posted that a bit prematurely. Tried moving the pump to a chassis fan header (to read the rpm), and ... it seems to work. 2500rpm flat, and suddenly the radiator fans are running way slower (~900rpm instead of ~1600) and the CPU is idling at 54 degrees (at around 4x the clock speed, 2248MHz). Could the header have died? As I said, it was hooked up to the board's "AIO_PUMP" header, so it should definitely be able to handle the power draw of a small pump. This is weird. Guess the next step is moving the pump back to the AIO header to see if it works?
Edit2: this keeps getting weirder. I tried running AIDA64 before shutting down, and the CPU seemed to level off at 80W power draw (a small peak at 116W) and throttled down to ~800MHz. It never passed 73 degrees in HWMonitor, but I suppose that might include some sort of offset? It's now been a couple of minutes since I shut down AIDA64 (it ran for about 1:30), and the CPU is down to 61 degrees, the rad fans at 1300rpm, and the side of the pump/block housing is still hot to the touch. Might the tubes be clogged? They're definitely not kinked (way too stiff for that). One of the tubes is noticeably warm near the block, but also cools off noticeably before reaching the rad - not exactly indicative of a cooler doing its job?
