Hi,
I have an Acer Extensa 5230E laptop that currently mounts a RAM

hynix 1 GB
2Rx16 PC2-5300S
555-12

I would like to ask if it is possible to mount this RAM taken from another Asus K50C laptop

Kingston 2GB
2Rx8 PC2-6400S
666-12-E2

Thank's
Regards

That could work but the performance would be slower. You always Want 2 sticks of the same RAM brand but if you don't mind it then go ahead. Just it won't be big hit on performance so

I would like to at least put 2 GB in the ACER that currently has 1 GB. I should try to remove the 1 GB one and put the 2 GB one. the fact is that if the voltages are the same or if they change brands, problems will arise. i dont know

Yes those sticks will run just at a slower speed due to the 2GB PC2-6400

You'd want two sticks for dual channel... single channel can have some notable performance hits.

I would just like to extend the memory to the laptop. always if you can use these ram. so I'll try the single channel with the 2gb memory and see if it holds up

As I mentioned 2 sticks is better with the same amount of RAM "2X1GB" but it shouldn't matter on the brands just has to be the same speed which for you is PC2-5300 but you can run with PC2-6400 it'll just automatically clock down too PC2-5300

Extend it by going 2x1GB sticks instead of 1x2GB so the system can work as it is supposed to. ;)

Sorry I did not understand. both are set 2 single sticks on two different laptops. 1 stick is 1 gb. and the other stick is 2 gb. (the 2gb stick is a single 2gb piece, there are not 2 1gb sticks). said this I would try to use these 2 rams in the same pc but apparently it is not possible.

so I'll replace what's in the laptop 1GB (hynix) with the 2GB one (Kingston).

it's possible to do it?

i understand , i can try to use the rams that i have now .

because to do as you say I should buy another 1gb hynix stick. and I don't think it's worth it. at this point I bought 2x2gb

2x2GB is ideal :toast:

Nothing will go wrong. Unless the laptop has a cmos speaker you'll here a x2 beep / long "for RAM Errors" or if you're laptop doesn't have that then nothing but a error on screen upon boot. In all though I think you'll be fine

i'm posting with ultra rare Kingston KHX6400S2UL/2G X2 (4GB total). Timings 4-4-4-12 in my Acer Ferrari 1200 also rare.

i will try with the ram sticks that i have now,

I'll put the results

first I will try with both then in total 3 gb.

and after only with the 2 gb one

mine is an old laptop that is over 10 years old. and I'm trying to update it with what I have. recovering pieces. if I can't. I will buy a new CPU and an SSD with 4 GB of RAM 2x2gb. your ram is ddr2?

Why a cpu? Yes PC2 is DDR2. I can assure you that the RAM wouldn't matter on that laptop unless it effects the video performance which is doubtful

Doing a search online also shows Acer Ferrari 1200 came out in 2009.

You may want to try 4GB stick if your going for slow timings. Even thou my lap is shown as 4GB max it can work with two 4GB sticks giving 8GB total.

Here 1 stick of memory in my laptop is 1T CMD, but two sticks is 2T CMD, very strange, if only I could edit the BIOS.
Also don't forget you can overclock laptop memory by editing the SPD, my sticks are edited, so they are faster than normal.

I think people are missing the point that he is already running single channel with the 1GB stick and that the 1GB stick is the slower of the two (not taking into account timings). So sure, add in the 2GB stick and you'll have your 3GB total with no slow down compared to before since it will still run at the same speed and in single channel mode (well, 2GB of it might run in flex mode but I've never bothered with it nor know if it is implemented on your chipset).

Chipset: Intel GL40

Notebook: Acer Extensa 5230E

Maximum Memory: 4GB

Standard Memory: 1GB removable

DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 128MEG X 64 •

or

DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256MEG X 64 •

i don't know what is flex mode and if is it in the bios .

yes, because putting a new cpu with an ssd is a little better than the laptop. but having already these ram available I would like to try.

Did some looking LINK and still that RAM will do fine

According to Intel that chipset does not support flex mode (again, I've never even bothered with it but would be interesting to hear about someone's experience who has implemented it). As others have said, put in that 2GB stick in the open slot and enjoy your 3GB.

Edit: In that datasheet, Intel calls it Intel Flex Memory Access
