Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing the industry's first 12-gigabyte (GB) low-power double data rate 4X (LPDDR4X) UFS-based multichip package (uMCP). The announcement was made as part of the company's annual Samsung Tech Day at its Device Solutions' America headquarters in San Jose, California.

"Leveraging our leading-edge 24-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4X chips, we can offer the highest mobile DRAM capacity of 12 GB not only for high-end smartphones but also for mid-range devices," said Sewon Chun, executive vice president of Memory Marketing at Samsung Electronics. "Samsung will continue to support our smartphone-manufacturing customers with on-time development of next-generation mobile memory solutions, bringing enhanced smartphone experiences to many more users around the globe."

Samsung is introducing its 12 GB uMCP solution just seven months after its launch of a 12 GB LPDDRX package based on 16Gb DRAM. By combining four of the 24Gb LPDDR4X chips (featuring the latest 1y-nanometer process technology) and ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage into a single package, the new mobile memory is able to break through the current 8 GB package limit and provide 10+ GB memory to the broader smartphone market.*

As the trend toward larger, higher-resolution smartphone displays continues to grow, more users will benefit from Samsung's uMCP solution when running data-intensive tasks or multitasking. With 1.5X capacity of the previous 8 GB package and a data transfer rate of 4,266 megabits per second (Mbps), the 12 GB uMCP can support smooth 4K video recording as well as accommodate AI and machine learning features even for mid-end smartphones.

Samsung plans to rapidly expand the availability of 10+ GB LPDDR DRAM to address the increasing needs of global smartphone makers for higher-capacity memory solutions, while reinforcing its competitive edge in the memory marketplace.

These will probably be reserved for "high end" ICL ultrabooks & AMD's next gen mobile APU, given 12GB is still a rarity in phones.

12GB is still a rarity in phones.
I'm not sure 12 GB is that rare in smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

Asus ROG Phone 2

OnePlus 7 Pro

Xiaomi Black Shark 2 or Black Shark 2 Pro

Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition

Nubia Red Magic 3

Lenovo Z6 Pro

Vivo iQOO

Samsung Galaxy Fold

ZTE Axon 10 Pro

List of 47 Smartphones with 12 GB

12GB was available last year, I'm talking about SKUs available with 12GB. You can probably count them on one hand, at least from major brands.

And here we go again, how many of these 12GB phones are sold as compared to 8GB variants

Those are 12Gbit or 1.5GByte DRAM die and good for 3GB/6GB/12GB configuration. Wish we had those for desktop RAM stick, than we could have 6GB stick instead 4 and 8GB stick for normal build.

I think you are a bit confused. Samsung has 12GByte modules already (96Gbit multi-die packages, which were used in pretty much all phones from that list @biffzinker listed earlier), and this one is a newer bulkier all-in-one combo: includes 4x24Gbit dies of LPDDR4X and UFS3.0 storage in the highest configuration.

Are you implying that 695 is a normal price for a phone?

Seriously I'd never pay that. About half that, is already stretching it. Its simply not worth anything more, IMO. Anything 500 and up is most definitely high end.

Apple proves that majority doesn't give a shit about the price, considering the market share and their device cost.

Its why so many people in the US retire with almost no money.

I don't care for US as I don't live there nor have their numbers. I kinda don't get why the remark matters to this subject, as it clearly proves that there is a strong demand.

In nothern europe apple takes solid 30% and up market share. The rest splits up with others. The number stars to distort, as people tend to have more than one device also.

Apple still commands a mere 10-14% of the smartphone market. Majority... ? But yes I hear ya. They're all idiots though paying those numbers for hardware like that. Majority or not :)

Becuase I know of people who buy a new apple iPhone every year, no matter the cost. And general statistics of how much money people retire with. I worked in the financial sector.

10-14% at global scale, but it is maybe 50-60% in US, Japan and S. Korea.
And also don't get why "some" people need new flagship phone every year!!
