coming from a 7960X, this is actually amazing. running benchmarks back to back none stop, the highest temp i've seen was 85*C. i'm using a Cooler Master MasterAir MA621P, which is pretty cheap. i paid about $35 for it, after rebate.

getting just under 14100 in cinebench R20. every review i've seen gets between 13600-13680. so i may have just got a "golden sample". now i'm second guessing watercooling this thing.

so, if anyone else is thinking of getting one of these, it's safe to go with an air cooler.

The difference in thermal density and topology of the chip's IHS compered to something like a 7960X is gigantic.
I had no issue even getting the 3970X completely fine under Noctua's U14S with one fan on decently tame RPM. Temps were at the 80s under stress.

I also keep wondering who got to pick that Cinebench render picture. And more importantly, why it was considered a good pick. It just screams IKEA student living

i understand. having 16 cores packed on one tiny chip right up against each other is harder to cool than a 2x larger chip with its' core scattered. still, it's incredibly impressive just how easy it is to cool this thing.

Love it!

i think they picked it for the complicated lighting and the large mix of different textures.

seems hard to justify $120 on an air cooler when this one can be picked up for half the cost or less and still does the job. and if you're overclocking, both coolers are useless anyway. at stock settings, this thing is sucking down just shy of 290W. when OCed i'm sure it can go north of 400W and you DO NOT want all that heat dumped inside the case. you want a rad to send all that heat right out.

Yeah, Some reviews used a 240mm aio which usually don't perform all that well and they were hitting around 80C.

Seriously. I neither have the money or the use case for HEDT platforms but reading the reviews of TR3k had me like wah!!! I REALLY want it. It's not like TR1k and 2k that were like great in some benches but predictably worse in others and games.
I'd even see some small time streamer picking Intel HEDT build on stream and the crowd was inevitably "why not go TR bro?" and the streamer replied that TR is kinda shit for gaming and it definitely shut down the crowd.
Not with TR3k though. Thing's a literal beast.

yes,TR3000 is pretty great if you have the use fr it.

I was even considering a 1920x for a separate machine given how ridiculously cheap it can be bought used, but that'd be 5x more stupid than to buy a 9900KS for my main machine now.

1920X is a bad buy even at its' low price. the motherboards are still expensive while the performance is spotty. that intra-die communication is a terrible bottleneck. i got a 1950X when it first came out. dumped it the next week and got a 7960X. cost 2x as much but at the time it was worth every penny. unless you just need the PCI E lanes and nothing else, buy literally anything else. intel 9th gen, 10th gen, ryzen 3xxx, etc. literally anything is better.

Yeah, I knew that TRX40 (3000) Threadripper would have all core performance through the roof... but the single core and gaming performance was the most amazing and unexpected to me!
