Godfall System Requirements List 12 GB VRAM for 4K and Ultra HD Textures

I think his point wasn't that consoles are going to use all 16GB RAM for games, but that they can get you 16GB RAM for $400 whilst Nvidia are only giving you 10GB RAM for $700. The GPU in the consoles may not be as good as the GPU in a 3080 but it's still a large, expensive piece of silicon since it also includes an 8C/16T CPU and all IO stuff. Yields and manufacturing cost are going to be roughly comparable to a GA102 die.
That's apples to oranges and you know it. Consoles are sold at a loss, the money's in the services.
As for RAM usage, current PC games typically use 4-7GB - I've just come here from GN with a video from Steve investigating exactly that as part of their 2 vs 4 sticks findings - and a lot of that is used as swap space for GPU VRAM. DirectStorage means that the consoles will probably permit developers to allocate up to 12GB RAM to the GPU, and if not immediately, that will eventually become the baseline minimum for developers to target when the inevitable mid-cycle console refreshes come out with increased specs and performance.
So sure of the future are you...
You don't feel comfortable with 10GB, don't get a 3080. I see no reason to parrot betrayal and whatnot about it.

And there we go, upwards of 6.5GB actual usage. Can I say 'I told you so' now?

If you read a couple of posts on that thread you'd see some people testing the game maxed out w/ FidelityFX LPM were usingallocating 11-12GB.
Ftfy.

The yt video I watched had the afterburner osd and it only had "mem used". I think there's a different field for allocated, no? I don't use it so I don't know.

So all that's saying is one single setting accounts for over 6GB of usage on its own, which says more about AMD's poor software development and less about how much vram is expected to increase in the future.

Whatever the reason, the claims were true. Turn everything to the max/on and it uses a lot of vram.

Personally though I wouldn't use just one game as an example of where the industry is headed.

Kinda mediocre game, but will get you a perf article soon

Then you are a bit more level-headed compared to some other people in this and similar threads :)

No. It has already been a known fact for awhile that “mem used” in Afterburner is not actual VRAM being used. It is only vram allocated.
