well what did you get and why?

i back up everything on disk that i can so if i have a drive fail, i can protect most of my files from vanishing, plus i make my own "favorites" music cds to play in my truck

from what i can see the market seems to be going to external dvd burners now but i still want it internal, guess im just old fashioned, i just dont know whats to look for to get a good one

You did not mention budget, if any.

When I replaced my old DVD burner, I opted to go with a Blu-Ray burner; LG WH16NS40.

I think the technology in disc burners is sort of stuck? Regardless, I have a LG BH16NS40 sitting in my case. It's not a bad drive.

Though if you want to do exotic stuff like ripping PS4 discs and the like, you'll have to look up specific models and even firmware versions.

I've got two LG GH24NSC0B burners in my rig.
Best I've ever owned. Bulletproof.
Various online retailers sell 'em new for anywhere between $21 and $32.

thanks guys, budget was wide open up to $100 but was hoping under $50 TBH, i just didnt want to get something only to find out there were much better options

i have a couple more questions

1 - is usb faster then sata?

2 - blue ray prices go way up there so im thinking not blue ray, but not sure, i just cant think of anything i would burn that is blue ray. what is the need for a blue ray burner and what would i be using it for any way? just copying movies and stuff?

3 - would an external burner be faster then an internal sata burner? i ask because mine has trouble with slow data transfers to the point it sometime freezes and fails on really large dat transfers of a couple GBs. thats the main reason i think its time for a new one

I have the best Blu-ray drive ever built, made by Pioneer. Sadly I can't remember the model number & my computer is in bits. I can no longer see it on EBAY, but it's easily recognisably by it's copper screws & extraordinary ultra high price tag. ..I had it imported from Japan some years ago. This was the only place I could find this drive so it looks somewhat rare now.

EDIT: It's something along the lines of this drive, but not sure if it's same model Pioneer BDR-S12J-X BD Drive (BDXL Support) Japan Domestic 4988028428159 | eBay

from my causal googling when looking to go external:

dvd is fine on usb 2 for some reason i recall an "up to 16x write speed" but don't take that as gospel.

blu ray need 3.1 (or whatever first gen usb3 is called theses days)

and though i fail at reciting all the bandwidth limitations but i'm sure usb 3.2(x2) smokes sata connections but i don't believe any cd/cd/bruray came close to needing sata's bandwidth to begin with.

also try cleaning the lens, those can get dirty with out being used.

You shouldn't have a problem with BluRay in that PC. I had a BluRay burner in my 2700k (z68) system I built in 2011.

so thats a YES?
usb3 is common since ivy bridge on intel; well, sandy bridge the Z68 chipset was gold but P67 and H67 were hit or miss sometimes. cheap H61 boards were left out in the cold.

  • You can get an internal Blu-ray burner from $60+ on Newegg.
  • I used to burn media that I was unlikely to watch again anytime soon to BD discs since they can hold 25GB and up to 100GB per disc to offload from my 4TB RAID 1.
  • None of the BD media on Newegg supports 100GB, they seem to cap out at 50GB.
  • Ridata $43.50 25 pack equates to $0.57 per 50GB disc, not including shipping; how does this compare to a single mass-storage drive that just sits on a shelf somewhere that you could offload data to?
  • We have a ton of LG appliances (not computer parts) and the quality assurance is garbage. If some folks aren't having problems great because I don't want to see anyone have problems though it is my experience with LG in a non-computer area.
I do burn to optical on occasion for mission critical stuff as a critical backup against extreme solar flares (nothing has hit Earth that hard since the 1800s when they were first putting up the cross-continental wiring). I consider optical media a backup medium of my typical back up medium. Here is how I prefer to look at the hierarchy of data:

  1. Live data on a drive that is always connected, RAID 1 for redundancy.
  2. Temporarily connected drive used to clone C:\, D:\, E:\ or F:\, clones are typically ~30 minutes for SSDs or ~60 for 4TB mechanical drives.
  3. A second temporary drive ensures that if a total catastrophe occurs to all three drives (2 in RAID 1 and the third the backup drive) that one of the two back up drives is NEVER connected at a given time.
  4. Optical disc as insurance against solar flare activity for mission critical stuff.
Optical is slower though it does have it's niche place in the market. If you're really hurting in regards to being able to buy a larger mechanical drive (the prices are still stupid) optical, to me at least, is a good way to offload some lower-priority data albeit you're trading time you have for burning and marking discs instead of cloning drives. If you can do a proper drive (RAID and external backups - all my external back ups are internal drives) setup then I'd still recommend optical for mission critical stuff.

When I clone drives I simply plug an internal drive (stored externally) in to this 5.25" adapter. I won't buy a computer case with fewer than two 5.25 external bays. My Blu-ray burner tray mechanism is broken so I've been forced to use a USB DVD burner for optical work the past year or two. I still prefer to burn to dual-layer DVD discs as ~8GB is plenty for my mission critical stuff. I hope this helps.

I recommend getting an LG WH16NS40. I've had mine for over two years and I've burned dozens of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. It's still going strong, and in my entire time of owning it, I've only gotten one coaster (it was due to system instability rather than the drive's fault).

Looks like Amazon Warehouse even has a used one for $49.71.

Also somewhat recently lucked out and managed to snag a WH14NS40 at a yard sale for cheap. That's another option.

It's a bit cheaper than the WH16NS40 when new, lacks some capabilities (mainly reading from and writing to BDXL's, which you're probably unlikely to be doing unless you want to back up 4K Blu-rays), but is otherwise a very similar drive.

thanks guys, thats why i love this place, lots of smart people who are always willing to help and teach

i agree about LG apliances though, every one we ever owned had issues, but on the flip side the LG electronics i bought were always great

i would like larger capacity to burn bigger files so i guess i need to get the blue ray for that

Invest in a Blu-Ray capable Burner Drive They are backward compatable with DVD.
^^^This^^^

so many ppl think its old fashioned using those thingis anymore! i disagree!!
^^^And This^^^

I still put one in all my own personal builds - which means I have to be careful when buying a case because many now no longer support external drive bays. :(

That said, while I prefer internal drives, a decent external drive is nice if you have multiple computers.

i mean as long WINDOWS recovery functions based on this kind of hardware i will always have this in stock.
75% of all issues regarding OS probs. and its recovery, written here on TPU, could have been solved by just using a *fkn-old-fashioned DVD, by the ppl themselves!

Sorry Oh No GIF by The Swoon

true story

longer support external drive bays
funny! i bought a case and one of the to-kill-reasons were having no slot for an internal DVD drive
