Looks like the raw power of the 12400 is more; though the 5600x seems to be more efficient as it consumes 67W power.
 
AMD has been selling Zen3 at a premium for nearly 2 years compared to previous Ryzen CPU's, I can see them releasing the Zen3+ lineup at the same kind of pricepoints as Zen3, and reducing the likes of the 5600x more inline with previous gens so roughly $170-$200 for the 5600x etc so Zen3+ to compete with AL and Zen3 at reduced pricing for close performance? win win for AMD, unless Intel really pulls a rabbit out of the hat with AL in performance that smashes AMD all over, in which case, they would be screwed for nearly a year before Zen4

Intel isn't going to catch up in efficiency anytime soon without a major arch and/or process rework, 10ESF (okay, "Intel 7") is good but it's not magic. But they don't need to. It'll do fine as long as:
  • Power consumption doesn't blow up the average board's VRM with 50A Vishays
  • Thermals are well managed
  • The performance is there
  • Intel and MS don't royally fuck up their work on the new hardware "thread director" and Windows scheduler
I'd worry more about the pricing. DDR5 won't be cheap, boards definitely won't be cheap (and look like it's going to be X99 all over again with how they clock DDR5), and the CPUs don't look cheap either. But if you're coming from Devil's Canyon and don't have any DDR4 kits on hand, I'm not sure how big of a deal that will actually be.
 
What also matters is pricing and availability. Hopefully there are enough chips to go around and it's not yet another paper launch.

I hope, because the tiny Intel stock cooler is going to struggle at 78W. 50 or 60W sure, but 78 is going to run the chip at at least 80C.

I don't really like how MS and Intel are "collaborating" on this. How newer (Skylake+) Intels started mandating Windows 10 a few years ago. On my 4690k, you could even run XP on it, no problem. Hardware and OS should remain independent of each other. Motherboard - fine. But hardware should not mandate an OS.

Those days are gone, brother. Trust me, I wish my 5900X (or rather, 3700X was much, much worse) was nearly as plug-and-play as my 4790K, but it's just not happening. Welcome to the crappy future. Rocket Lake might be the last CPU family that you can just set and forget. But even then microcode and BIOSes still made a difference to performance so maybe not RKL.

Get ready for a whole bunch more collaboration. If Intel isn't working closely with MS then Alder Lake launch is going to be the greatest trainwreck in the history of CPU launches. Same way that if AMD isn't collaborating with MS, then we get horrendous performance on Zen 2 and Zen 3 as Windows just disregards CPPC and chooses whatever core it damn well pleases and loading cores inter-CCX, bugs that never get fixed and just keep slaughtering performance.

It's the new normal. You could always stick to Linux. I hear performance isn't terrible on Zen 3.
 
How does Linux do it, then? How do ALL their distros work on ALL processors?

I remember when I had a very old copy of Ubuntu on my hard drive. I wasn't aware of that. Put it in a new computer and Linux just booted up, no problem.

Yeah, I'll admit that this was Haswell or earlier.

I tried to install Ubuntu on my new laptop(Comet Lake; i7-10510U) and it was a headache(I admit, that was due to an integrated 16GB Optane drive, which I had to disable).
 
with all these price climbing up, im gonna be extra careful when upgrading...
ill be questioning myself do i need a new shiny cpu/mobo/ram combo? is my current system struggling?
 
I'm unsure as well.

The 5000 series Ryzens are 7nm whereas 11th Gen Intels are still 14nm.

Alder Lake, which I expected to be 7nm with DDR5 are actually 10nm it seems, with 7nm coming in 2023. We shall see how the power consumption of these 12th gen chips turns out.
 
Well the 5600X is performant, efficient and expensive; and the 12400 is...'n't. As far as leaks go the 12400 will be amazing, and with TSMC running at capacity, AMD will have trouble undercutting it price-wise. So Intel should be ahead assuming there won't be a Ryzen 6000 series, with V-cache and maybe some general arch tweaks
 
12400 sounds interesting, but it seem like it gets the same gear 1 of max 3600-3866 on ddr4, while 5600X often manages 4000+. Also 12400 seems to be locked so only potential is the 102.9 bclk OC which gains around 2%, while 5600X can easily get 5-6% which pbo and curve optimizer. You can go for ddr5 6000MHz+ and maybe beat 5600X, but the price will be insane. My bet: 12400 wil beat the 5600X slightly stock, but 5600X will probably be as fast or faster once tweaked. If we can get a okay B660 and 12400 for below 5600X+B550 we have a good case for 12400.
